Greetings Gastronomes,
The warm weather lends itself to seasonal summer work: scooping ice cream, harvesting from fields, and shucking oysters by the seaside. Just remember that there are valuable lessons to be learned from every experience, however temporary. As university students in 2004, we didn't realize how useful our summer gigs as campus tour guides would be (not least because it's the first time we worked side by side as colleagues). Seven years later those communications skills, a desire to help people find their way, and an endless quest for information play a huge role in our daily dealings at Good Food Jobs.
For those of you who can wax nostalgiac on the bygone days of summer employment, let us know your favorite summer job - in 140 characters or less - and we'll tweet the best ones (#goodsummerjobs) all week long.
Happy Summer,
Taylor & Dorothy

We never get tired of hearing the advice that sometimes you have to work for low or no pay in order to find your way into a dream (paid) job. It's not because we don't believe in the value of good labor and it's not because we advocate suffering. It's just that we have met so many people, both early and late in their careers, yearning to find their place in - or a foot in the door to - the world of food, and we know from experience that volunteers and unpaid interns usually blossom into something more. We didn't all have to sacrifice for our current job satisfaction, but Karen is the latest proof that if you really want something, you can go out and get it. Especially when you open your eyes to the inherent value in experience. Read More
