Good Food Jobs is a gastro-job search tool, designed to link people looking for meaningful food work with the businesses that need their energy, enthusiasm, and intellect. We post opportunities with farmers and food artisans, policy makers and purveyors, retailers and restaurateurs, economists, ecologists, and more.
the gastrognomes is a blog for food lovers who want to put their passions to work. We profile the most interesting, engaging, and unlikely food professionals that we find, and we publish them here to inspire you.

"We received a bunch of great applications! Thanks for putting together a great food-job oriented website where a tiny company like us can post next to much bigger fish."
- Caroline, Job Poster
"You've been an ideal source for staffing our team, leading excellent candidates with the right experience and personality to us. Happy Monday,
In our effort to continually improve the site, this week we implemented some changes this week - and have been experiencing some growing pains as a result. We apologize for any frustration caused by technical glitches - rest assured that we're hard at work to fix them.
In the meantime, we're embracing the chaos and offering all new users a free post for the next 48 hours. If you haven't created an account with us yet, please forward your job post to info@goodfoodjobs.com and we'll make it live asap.
And, as always, if you are experiencing any difficulties - whether you're a new user, or returning - don't ever hesitate to reach out to us at help@goodfoodjobs.com. We're literally here at the other end of the keyboard, waiting to hear from you.
Cheers,
Taylor & Dorothy

SUMMER PLANS
We always say that knowing you want to work in the field of food is both a blessing and a curse.
BLESSING
The greater food field - beyond working in restaurants, and particularly for sustainable food businesses and organizations - is a growing field with an abundance of opportunity.
CURSE
There is no set path.
This makes it difficult for young adults scattered across college campuses to forge their way in the food world - and we know how that feels. It's not like studying accounting to be an accountant, or plugging away in med school to be a doctor . . . our undeveloped field requires a bit more creativity and lacks a lot of the structure that another career path may provide.
But that shouldn't deter you. We at good food jobs are trying - every step of the way - to make it easier for you. Now that we're finally approaching that time when everyone's looking for summer internships and job opportunities, we wanted to share some advice. Start by checking out what's available in our "Internship" category, or simply peruse the site and get a feel for the types of businesses with which you want to be involved. Don't wait for them to post an internship - get in touch immediately to see if they have seasonal work. And don't give up if they simply say no . . . propose a project, identify a need that you can fill, or work for free (PS check out this handy graphic to answer the age old question "Should I Work For Free?")

And for those of you about the graduate, here's another incredible opportunity, coming from the new Farmer Apprentice Program at the University of Vermont:
In response to the overwhelming interest in a later summer start to our new Farmer Apprentice Program, we have changed the dates for 2011!
To make this opportunity available to more stellar students, we will be condensing our 7 month curriculum into 5 months of intensive farming and learning. And, since we have shortened the length of the program, we have also lowered tuition.
New Dates: May 31 – November 4, 2011
New Cost: $4800
Do you have a resource that can help current students or recent grads? Or job opening available for them? If so, contact us at info@goodfoodjobs.com

Great Performances
There's no greater feeling than knowing your work helps people, and Lauren proves that. We met her across the Atlantic at Slow Food's Terra Madre event. At the time, she was finishing up her degree, with no solid plans for work afterward. Less than 3 months later she reached out to tell us she'd landed her dream job. As she advises below, talk to everyone . . . you never know who might help you. In this case, we're delighted to report that she found her new position through Good Food Jobs. Read more
