Company description

Garden by the sea! This magnificent private estate, located on Boston's North Shore, has seven acres of restored 1903 Olmsted gardens including extensive perennial borders, a water garden, rose gardens, an herb garden and a large ornamental vegetable and cutting garden -- all maintained to the highest standards using ecologically sound methods.

Job description

If you envision a vegetable garden as a feast for all the senses, please consider joining our team.

In this splendid historic garden, 36 raised beds are devoted to growing a wide variety of organic blue-ribbon vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers -- all with great beauty, style, and whimsy. Thornless blackberries and espaliered heirloom fruit trees are trained on the surrounding fence, adjacent to a crabapple allée.  This is not a farm; the garden is highly ornamental and requires creativity, hand cultivation, and meticulous maintenance.

Under the direction of our Senior Horticulturist, you will be responsible for all aspects of vegetable gardening, from seeding through harvest. (And yes, that includes a lot of weeding.) This position is seasonal and can be either part- or full-time depending on your experience and interests. If you wish to focus solely on vegetables, the schedule is three days a week, 7:30 to 4:00.
If you also are able to work with cut flowers or perform ornamental pruning, the position is full-time. No overtime, weekend, or holiday work is required so you will be free to fully enjoy our beautiful New England summer.

We are seeking a vibrant individual with an discerning eye, dedication to detail, and a great work ethic. Ideally, you will have comparable experience on a large residential vegetable garden. You should be able to lift 40 pounds and work outside in all weather conditions while maintaining a productive pace.

We offer an generous hourly wage ($15 an hour, more with experience),  hot weather popsicle breaks, and the chance to grow the vegetables you love in a beautiful oceanside setting. A person obsessed with working to the highest standards will take satisfaction from being part of a team that understands and values people with a similarly elevated sense of aesthetics.

Compensation

this position is: hourly, $15/hr +
