Sterling College invites applications for a full-time faculty position, to begin in August 2017. The College seeks candidates from diverse professional backgrounds who have a demonstrated passion for environmental stewardship education, interdisciplinary approaches to the liberal arts, and a deep commitment to experiential pedagogy.
Specifically, Sterling encourages candidates who have expertise and experience teaching in the following or similar areas:
- Sustainable Agriculture: Ecological Livestock & Grazing Systems
- Teaching assignments will include some of the following subjects: Livestock & Grazing Systems Management, Animal Science, Whole Farm Planning, Agroecology and/or other courses consistent with the needs of the program and the College’s core curriculum.
- Candidates are expected to have considerable livestock and grazing management experience.
- As part of the Rian Fried Center (RFC) team, the successful candidate will contribute to campus farm design and management. The RFC is the instructional laboratory for an experiential and place-based curriculum that integrates the kitchen, farm, and forest.
Position responsibilities include:
- Teaching within Sterling’s interdisciplinary, ecology-focused curriculum (including courses focused on ecology and environmental stewardship in the core curriculum),
- Working closely with students on academic advising and independent research projects,
- Mentoring students participating in the College’s Work Program, and
- Participating in community governance.
Upon mutual agreement, responsibilities related to teaching, may also include leading field-based study programs, managing a campus instructional facility, supporting extracurricular student activities (such as the Outing Club), participating in the College’s Winter Expedition, and engaging with the College community beyond the academic program.
Candidates should hold a master’s or terminal degree in a relevant field and/or have a combination of graduate education and extensive experience. Ideal candidates will have significant teaching experience.
We seek candidates with expertise in multicultural education, diversity, and inclusion, who can support the College in examining power and privilege in the context of the relationship between humans and the natural environment.
