NYU Steinhardt has one-of-a-kind integration of education, communication, health, and the arts, with eleven departments, seventeen research centers and institutes, 292 full-time faculty, and close to six thousand students. We are committed to substantially increasing the proportion of our faculty from historically underrepresented groups as we strive to create the most intellectually diverse, inclusive, and equitable institution that we can. Through research, teaching and community service, the mission of the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies is to generate and disseminate knowledge to effect sustainable change in the well-being of local, urban, and global communities. One of the first master’s degree programs in the US devoted to food scholarship, the Department employs approaches from the humanities and social sciences, and prepares students to analyze the current American food system, its global connections, and local alternatives. Students examine cultural, political, economic, environmental, and geographic approaches to food within local, urban, and global contexts.
