<p>North Coast Opportunities, Inc. (NCO) is the Community Action Agency that serves Lake and Mendocino Counties, as well as parts of Humboldt, Sonoma, Del Norte, and Solano Counties. NCO was established in 1968 as part of President Johnson's War on Poverty, with the mission of assisting low-income and disadvantaged people to become self-reliant. NCO provides a safety net of emergency assistance, employment, and training services for low-income individuals and families.</p> <p>The Gardens Project of North Coast Opportunities seeks to relieve hunger and inadequate nutrition throughout Mendocino and Lake Counties by creating access to community-based food production and local, nutritious food. Over the last decade we have worked with local government and private landowners to lease underutilized land around low-income neighborhoods for the creation of 45 new community gardens. Job description

<p>The Nutrition Basics Project coordinates and collaborates with USDA-funded nutrition activities in Mendocino County. The project brings $225,000 in  in 2-year SNAP-Ed grants into the county and provides nutrition and outreach services to <strong> </strong>2,700 low-income Mendocino County residents per year. <br /><br />You will work with up to 7 farmers markets to develop and strengthen nutrition education programming for SNAP-eligible children through the Power of Produce (POP) Club program. In addition, you will work with an existing coalition of federally-funded food program administrators (food banks, free and reduced meals at schools, senior food boxes, WIC, and SNAP/CalFresh), non-profits, and public health prevention staff to ensure access to healthy, local food for all. An important component of this work will be capacity-building in agencies to conduct outreach and marketing to promote the POP Club, food and nutrition workshops, and county-wide nutrition initiatives through social and traditional media, Family Resource Centers, and other programs engaging SNAP-eligible populations.</p> <p>Term: November 2016 – November 2017<br />  </p> <p><strong>AmeriCorps benefits include</strong>:</p> <ul> <li>Biweekly living allowance</li> <li>paid holidays, sick leave and vacation</li> <li>$5,775 education award</li> <li>housing assistance</li> <li>health coverage</li> <li>relocation assistance</li> <li>A network of over 180,000 AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers and alums.</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p><strong>Specific Requirements:</strong></p> <ul> <li>Must be able to commit to entire service term.</li> <li>College Degree Required.</li> <li>Ideal candidate will have experience in engaging teen volunteers, community organizing, and/or nutrition</li> <li>Strong written and oral communication skills</li> <li>Ability to use Microsoft Office and social media platforms</li> <li>Will enjoy working with people of diverse backgrounds</li> <li>Flexibility to work some nights and weekends</li> <li>Ability to do some physical work preferred</li> <li>Bilingual in English and Spanish is beneficial but not required</li> <li>Must have valid driver's license and reliable transportation with auto insurance.</li> </ul>
