Retail Trainer - Oakland
About the job:
Blue Bottle is writing a new chapter to the story and traditions of coffee, food and hospitality, and our retail trainers are some of the first touch points in a barista’s journey here. Exemplars of hospitality, our trainers create exceptional training experiences for our new team members so they feel empowered to create delicious drinks and delightful guest experiences on their first days in the cafe. We are on the search for trainers to join our Oakland-based team.
As a trainer you will organize, coordinate, design, and conduct trainings for baristas, other internal staff, and the general public. You’ll also support research and development projects to support the constant evolution of our materials. This is a full-time, salaried position based in Oakland and you will report to our Regional Training Manager for Northern California.
You will:
- Organize, coordinate and facilitate thoughtful and effective trainings for new and seasoned team members alike, focused on technical coffee skill, hospitality soft skills and Blue Bottle values
- Communicate clearly to your trainees their training schedules and what to expect in the lab with you
- Collaborate with retail managers to support in-cafe trainings, quality control and continued education for their teams, and ensure managers have a deep understanding of the strengths and opportunities of each of their team members
- Regularly visit cafes and work shifts with our retail teams to assess and coach baristas, as well as occasionally support Blue Bottle external events as baristas
- Develop in-house training and educational materials and collaborate with lead baristas on barista training both in the lab and in our cafes
- Keep our training lab humming along --our machines and tools not only shine but are always in proper working form
- Organize and conduct research and development projects for coffee and coffee equipment
You are:
- A proud representative of Blue Bottle at all times. You are passionate about Blue Bottles vision and purpose --you value what we do (from product to people) and who we are (from guest to teammate)
- Always on top of your game: your espresso preparation, coffee brewing and milk skills are inspiring as is your dedication to creating delightful and surprising hospitality experiences
- A self starter who is able to receive direction but equally capable to fill time productively with limited supervision
- An exceptional communicator - you love helping people navigate the unknown and making them feel comfortable in a new space by sharing the knowledge needed to be successful
- A kind teacher - you love sharing and imparting knowledge and meet people where they’re at
- A dedicated team player: you’re flexible and accommodating, you do what it takes to help others succeed
- Excited by solving new and unconventional problems, and energized by helping to build things from the ground up
- Genuinely curious and daresay obsessive about coffee, food and hospitality
You have:
- 2+ years retail and/or customer service experience
- 2+ years specialty coffee or equivalent experience
- A strong and diverse knowledge of specialty coffee preparations, which is necessary for the position
- Strong communication skills in written and verbal forms, one-on-one and in large groups. Able to organize and adapt information for both the coffee professional and layperson
- A love and respect of delicious coffee and food
A few benefits we offer:
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage for eligible employees starting on your first day
- 401(k) plan
- Paid time off
- Free drinks at any of our cafes and a complimentary bag of beans to take home each week
- Discounts on any Blue Bottle food items and merchandise
