Woodland Gardens is a 12 acre, USDA Certified Organic vegetable, fruit and cut-flower farm in Winterville, Georgia, located 10 minutes from downtown Athens. Established in 2000, we specialize in highly diverse annual production, and we grow over 80 different types of fruits and vegetables. Our focus is on specialty production for chefs, a 100 member CSA, and direct retail sales at our Atlanta farmers market.

The farm operates year-round using heated greenhouses and high tunnels and has a full time crew of 6 plus 2 managers.  While we are an intensely cultivated farm that does high volume sales, our fields are constantly rotated and cover cropped in an effort to replenish the soil as we strive for efficiency, quality, and the ability to continually improve and limit our inputs.  Everyone on our farm team is skilled and experienced, and that keeps our farm tremendously productive and (usually) very well organized. We also have perennial fruit (figs, blackberries, blueberries), a flower component of the farm, and bees!   

Job description

We are looking to fill our assistant farm manager position starting as soon as possible.  This is a long term, full time position at a well recognized, highly productive USDA Certified Organic Farm.  We are one of the largest "small scale" organic farms that operate in Atlanta and work with tons of restaurants within the city.  If hired, training under the current assistant farm manager will begin immediately.

Responsibilities and Expectations

Marketing

Manage, with assistance, all aspects of a 100-member produce box program. This includes and is not limited to: maintaining records and books, communicating with box members, entering payments and data into Quickbooks, preparing, packing and transporting boxes every Tuesday to the in town drop-off point, coordinate farm pick up, stay and greet customers each week from approximately 4:45 - 6 pm, and pickup boxes and supplies on Wednesday when returning into town from Atlanta

Farmers Market- prepare van for market and keep van supplied each week with all supplies necessary for market, work the stand each Saturday (with one Saturday off/month), operate register, help train market workers, help prepare all produce for sale

Coordinate and execute weekly Athens and Atlanta restaurant deliveries- load van, drive and deliver in a professional manner, keep invoices and checks organized, wear appropriate attire for handling produce boxes efficiently

On- Farm Management

Work with farm manager in planning and overseeing cover crop schedule

Maintain all farm buildings in an organized manner – manage the use and return of all tools to appropriate locations, and ensure a general level of tidiness

Assist farm manager in keeping all needed supplies on hand (packaging, soil amendments, cleaning, office supplies, and maintenance supplies, etc.)

Maintain and execute maintenance of small and large farm equipment and growing house infrastructure

Organic Production

Work alongside farm crew in all production related activities – bed preparation, harvest, and general farm upkeep

Assist farm manager with proper care and maintenance of all perennials

Qualification, Requirements and Expectations:

Limited experience with annual and perennial organic systems and production is required

Minimal Spanish language knowledge required but must also be willing to use it on the farm

Experience with delivery van driving and a clean driving record are required

Must be able to lift 50+ pounds on a regular basis

Assistant Manager shall attend most markets in Atlanta on Saturdays (typically will have one market off per month)

Weekly work hours may exceed 50 hours in peak growing times, less during non-peak times

Record-keeping skills are required. Ability to work alongside a diverse farm crew on all aspects of farm production – harvest, planting, weeding, maintenance is required.

 

 Compensation and Benefits

Assistant Manager shall receive a yearly salary of $30,000 (2017 season) with the potential for pay increase the following season

Assistant Manager shall have the opportunity to join company health insurance policy at no cost to employee

Assistant manager shall receive 2 weeks paid vacation, and opportunities for other planned days off
