Real Food Real Stories (RFRS) seeks an energetic and relationship-oriented individual with event planning expertise and community building skills to work directly with the Founder and Associate Director and build this early-stage organization into a viable non-profit.
The Storytelling Program Manager position includes the curation and management of a calendar of live-storytelling gatherings that deeply engage eaters to connect and support their local changemakers in food. Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Programming (12 hours/ week)
- Work with Director and Associate Director to design and implement gatherings
- Manage an engaging calendar of storytelling gatherings
- Manage and train event volunteers and staff
- Manage and train interns to support event-based programming or media production
- Strategic financial planning of gatherings
- Coordinate and manage food and beverage sponsorship
- Develop and implement long-term goals and objectives.
- Develop an evaluation framework to assess the strengths of gatherings, successful outcomes, and identify areas for improvement.
- Support collaborative efforts with RFRS collaborators and volunteers
- Serve as RFRS ambassador during RFRS gatherings
- Serve as RFRS ambassador during partner events, as needed
Marketing (8 hours/ week)
- Work with Director and Associate Director to design and manage social media marketing plan, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to increase RFRS reach and community engagement
- Design and create marketing materials
- Manage press and media outreach
- Manage gathering communications, including invites, Eventbrite registration, and post-gathering recaps and surveys Visual promotional signages at gathering
Qualifications & Skills
- Must be local to the Bay Area
- Ability to work nights and weekends on gatherings
- Minimum of two years of experience in event planning and management
- Candidate must have customer service in their DNA and be self-described as a “people person” to work with a variety of different clients from producers to food makers to activists to staff members to guests
- Passionate about the food system in its entirety with a progressive lens, including agriculture, food justice, food access, etc.
- Passionate about creating connections between changemakers and eaters
- Thrives in startup, creative environments and must be able to be adaptive and proactive
- Basic social media & marketing skills, including ability to test different marketing channels for effectiveness & reach
- Strong organizational abilities: candidates must be able to manage many different tasks at the same time.
- Have an eye for detail but not lose sight of the big picture.
- Strong communicator and developed writing skills
- A good culture fit:

- Relationship-oriented and understands the importance of community
- Understands importance of creating a space for authentic and vulnerable sharing
Additional Desired Qualifications:
- Well connected and networked in the Bay Area food scene and/or media scene
- Experience working for a nonprofit organization is helpful, as is experience working within yearly budget (in generating revenue as well as keeping expenses within plan)
- Ability to manage storytelling media production with Director and production contractors
- Graphic design skills a plus, but not required
This is a paid hourly position at 20 hours per week to start with potential to move to increased hours. Compensation is $25/hour.
