The Hudson Valley Farm Hub is seeking a Spanish Instructor to help foster communication between monolingual English and Spanish speakers on our team. The Spanish Instructor will create curriculum and lesson plans and teach a weekly Spanish lesson to a group of staff members, including ProFarmer trainees who are a part of a multi-year, residential professional farmer training program. S/He will work to provide a learner-centered, participatory experience, and to align classes with concurrent program activities and with our organizational culture, mission, and vision. S/he will foster an immersive language experience by teaching predominantly in the target language.
If the consultant is fully bilingual and has sufficient experience and certifications, there may be opportunities to expand responsibilities to include providing translation for select Farm Hub and LEP documents and interpretation for meetings, as needed.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Spanish Instruction
- Develop Spanish curriculum, including annual syllabi and lesson plans, with content and vocabulary aligned with farm work, program activities, and the ProFarmer curriculum
- Teach weekly, 1.5-hour Spanish lesson (class will be scheduled on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday in the late afternoon/evening)
- Assist with planning for select educational language activities beyond Spanish classes, for example, all-staff team-building activities
- With relevant staff, co-develop and implement means for evaluating student progress in language acquisition
- Monthly, meet with staff who are coordinating language programming and other relevant members of our team
Requirements and Qualifications
Required experience and qualifications
- Fluency in English and Spanish
- Certificate of teaching ESL or Spanish as a second language or equivalent
- Commitment to mission and vision of LEP and the Farm Hub
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including group facilitation
- Three years of experience teaching English or Spanish as a second language and some experience teaching beginner Spanish
- Experience in developing a language curriculum, including annual syllabi and lesson plans
- Computer skills including Microsoft Office suite
Strongly Preferred
- Translation experience
- Interpretation experience
- Experience with food systems and agriculture
- Experience working with immigrants, specifically farmworkers
- Experience using learner-centered education methods (e.g. popular/participatory education; peer-to-peer learning, inquiry learning; project-based learning)
- Trained in the Direct Method (Teaching solely in target language)
- BestPlus Certified
Compensation and term of employment:
- This is a temporary, part time position to start as early as mid-May and run through December 2016, with the potential for extension
- Compensation is $32/hour
- Hours per week will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and agreed upon responsibilities, with a minimum of 2 hours per week (one 1.5 hour class, .5 hour prep time) plus a monthly 1-hour check-in
