The Street Vendor Project (SVP) at the Urban Justice Center seeks a motivated and organized individual to for a part-time position to manage and run the Spring-Summer 2016 Vendy Plaza, a new Vendy Awards venture.In 2015, the Vendy Awards created “Vendy Plaza,” a thriving outdoor food marketplace and small business incubator located at La Marqueta in East Harlem. Vendy Plaza is part of a long-term project to revitalize La Marqueta and create revenue opportunities for small food businesses.The Vendy Plaza earned the title of “East Harlem’s newest culinary hot spot" by AMNY and will be coming back bigger and better in Spring 2016, with weekly markets each Sunday afternoon at La Marqueta through the Fall. Under the supervision of the Director of SVP and the Managing Director of the Vendys, the Vendy Plaza Market Manager will be responsible for executing the Vendy Plaza, including recruitment & organization of vendors, community outreach, and marketing of the event for a 6-month time period.Responsibilities:
- Work with SVP & Vendy Awards management to execute and communicate a shared vision for this venture
- Recruit and organize local vendors from East Harlem and surrounding neighborhoods through direct outreach and partner organizations
- Organize and work with existing network of SVP members as well as new recruits to curate vendor line up each week
- Create and coordinate special programming including book signings, cooking demonstrations, games, etc.
- Handle marketing of events, including Social Media (#VendyPlaza), website updates, distribution of marketing materials (posters, flyers), and coordination with PR agency
- Meet with and utilize local organizations, city agencies, and community groups to identify available resources and promote Vendy Plaza
- Manage Vendy Plaza so that each market runs smoothly and on schedule. Including: set-up/breakdown, vendor organization, and managing market staff and volunteers
- Recruit & Manage volunteers for day-of-logistics: set-up/breakdown, staffing bar, security, etc.
- An exceptionally entrepreneurial individual with strong management and organizational skills who is ready to hit the ground running
- Experience in event management or coordination of large-scale conferences, meetings, or social gatherings
- Experience building relationships with diverse groups of people, including ability to work with recent immigrants (i.e., NYC street vendors) from diverse backgrounds and cultures
- Has an interest or background in community development/revitalization or the organization of small business owners
- Has a passion and appreciation of street food and/or the neighborhood of East Harlem
- Ability to communicate in Spanish is highly desired
- Must be available to work in East Harlem on Sundays
