Job description

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC's soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions.

The Project Coordinator for the NYC Compost Project hosted by Queens Botanical Garden reports to the Compost Project Manager. This person is primarily responsible for delivering workshops and trainings (including the yearly Master Composter course), providing technical assistance to community compost sites, and planning public outreach events. This person must be able to track all of their activities and efforts and submit data to the Project Manager in pre-defined quantitative or narrative format as needed.

 Tuesday through Saturday work week with some evenings and Sundays required
 Local travel required
 Bilingual Spanish/English or Chinese/English.
Responsibilities:
 Plan and teach workshops on a range of composting topics to a wide variety of audiences based on program goals and direction of the Project Manager
 Plan, coordinate and teach the yearly Master Composter Certificate Course with the Project Manager
 Provide ongoing technical assistance, resources and other support to community compost sites across Queens; including administration of the Community Compost Recognition Program, which encourages best practices in urban composting.
 Develop new and steward existing relationships with partner organizations, community groups and compost sites
 Track programmatic data for submission to DSNY, including all information about events, Master Composters and community contacts
 Provide ongoing support to Master Composters in completing their service requirements and volunteer projects.
 Plan several larger public events yearly (i.e. Pumpkin Smash, Leaf raking events, tours of compost sites, etc.) and carry out strategic outreach to reach new communities
 Maintain supply of educational and outreach materials provided by BRS and Queens Botanical Garden
 Maintain bins, signage and active compost piles at QBG’s compost demonstration site
 Manage and report sales of compost bins, compost crank, and any other compost-related equipment
 Manage Compost Helpline and e-mail inquiries
 Support the NYCCP hosted by QBG team as needed and/or directed by the Project Manager or Director of Education.

Requirements/Skills:
 Bachelor’s Degree with minimum two years of related work experience
 Strong administrative and organizational skills (inclusive of Excel, MS Word, Outlook, and Google forms)
 Foundation in the basic science of composting and a strong interest in learning and teaching best practices in urban composting
 Strong public speaking skills; able to lead workshops, trainings and presentations in an informal setting
 Commitment to the values and mission of NYC Compost Project and Queens Botanical Garden
 Good sense of humor, flexibility and openness to learning
 Comfortable with and sensitive to a wide range of people and environments
 Valid driver’s license.
