Slow Food USA seeks a leader to build and execute the organization’s communication and small donor fundraising strategy. Slow Food is a global brand, dedicated to promoting food that is good, clean, and fair for all. This position is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic mid­-career communications professional to build a multi­-channel campaign platform to reach and engage millions of consumers around contemporary food issues, such as biodiversity, meat consumption, and school gardens.

Job description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the position has full support of the organization’s leadership and is the first hire coming out of a strategic planning process. SFUSA is looking for a builder of new work more than a maintainer of existing work, and one who is comfortable scaling domestic campaigns in concert with global counterparts. Some of the assets a successful candidate will have to work with include:
  • More than 750 thousand social media followers and an email list of 100K + 

  • Access to a network of 150 on-the-­ground local chapters 

  • Global reach, through Slow Food USA’s parent organization, Slow Food International 

  • An “edgy,” positive brand, and messaging that resonates widely 

  • Multiple high profile domestic and international events and other activities each year 

  • A track record of successfully engaging an audience and driving action on the ground 

  • Access to staff, interns, and a budget for consulting support

EXPERIENCE 

  • Experience setting and executing a vision, and leading teams in a changing landscape
  • Experience launching successful multi­channel communication campaigns, including: digital and social media, email, print, media relations, advertising, and internal communications 

  • Proven ability to develop and sustain relationships with internal and external constituencies, including volunteer groups, partner organizations, and the media 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to master complex issues, convey information clearly and communicate a compelling and inspired vision 

  • Proficiency in a wide array of communications and information management software, including: Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, Salesforce, email clients such as Exact Target, Campaign Monitor as well as some knowledge of HTML 

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously 

  • Proven ability to step into an unfamiliar situation and add immediate value 

  • Strong interpersonal communication and relationship skills, including ability and desire to work well as part of a team

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Design and build a communications platform to grow the reach and engagement with the Slow Food brand across multiple tiers of engagement and communications channels 

  • Execute time-­limited, focused campaigns around resonant messages and events 

  • Activate stakeholders to engage in desired behaviors across multiple tiers of engagement 
(e.g., retweet, sign a petition, organize an event)
  • Identify and cultivate brand and content partnerships to reach new audiences and provide additional opportunities for engagement 

  • Develop and administer digital, print, social and website communications assets 

  • Collaborate with development staff around donor communications design 

  • Lead list acquisition efforts, individual gift appeals, and renewals 

  • Identify key performance metrics, set targets, and measure success 

  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Executive Director and Board on how to expand Slow Food’s message 

  • Manage relationships with market research, IT, copy, graphics & design consultants
