About the FarmLetterbox Farm is a collectively-owned and operated farm in Hudson, NY. We are a successful start-up farm heading into our fourth season. For the 2016 season, we will be raising 2.5 acres of vegetables, greens, and herbs, 3000 broilers, 500 laying hens, 25 hogs, 500 meat rabbits. We market our goods through two high-traffic farmers markets, a small full-plate CSA, and about a dozen core wholesale and restaurant accounts.
Crew Member Positions
Each of our three crew members will spend roughly 50% their week performing core responsibilities in vegetable production tasks, harvesting, and other aspects of the farm. Each crew member will have delegated responsibilities such as monitoring greenhouse seeding, managing compost, or manning one of our market stands. In addition to these tasks, each will focus in one of the farm’s enterprises.
Greens & Herbs Focus
In addition to core responsibilities, this member of the crew will spend 25-50% of their week working independently and/or with the vegetable manager on producing and harvesting greens, herbs, and specialty vegetables. This is an ideal position for someone who is interested in small-scale intensive farming, market gardening, and/or producing for restaurants and other specialty markets. This crew member will
- assist or lead in daily harvest of 60+ herbs, greens, flowers, and specialty crops
- assist or lead in seeding and transplanting of greens/herbs successions twice monthly
- Operate BCS walk-behind tractor for soil work and other tasks
- Maintain production records for various specialty crops
- assist in developing weekly wholesale availability list, invoicing and pack-out for wholesale accounts
Desired Skills & Qualifications
- At least 1 year of full-time work in farming, or, related fields such as landscaping, culinary work, etc.
- Strong work ethic and an eye for both quality and efficiency
- Strong teamwork and communication skills; patience, flexibility, and positivity.
- Applicants should have a strong understanding of the physical requirements of working on a farm and being outside in all kinds of weather.
Compensation & Expectations: Position starts in April and ends in late October. Hourly expectation is 30 hours/week during the low season (April, May, October) and 50 hrs/week during peak season (June-September). This is a stipended position, $1400/month plus a full-diet CSA share (meat, eggs, vegetables, and starches, a $1000+ value). Housing is not included; having personal transportation is necessary. However, we are within two miles of downtown Hudson, with good local housing options available. Employees will receive 3 days of sick leave/vacation time during the season.
