About the Job:
Blue Bottle Coffee is searching for a Product Designer with a strong background in retail packaging and collateral and an excellent understanding of form, structure, and materials. This position will help create great design for new product releases, cafe offerings, and more. The right person for Blue Bottle is moved by simplicity and beauty, and designs packaging that elicits the wonder of surprise and delight. The Packaging Designer works closely with the Art Director, Founder, and the Finance and Production teams to design creatively within a retail environment and under tight budget constraints. This role also guides the process, timing, and budget for packaging launches. Meticulous attention to detail and quality are a must as you will manage the technical oversight of the design. Relationships with sustainable vendors and manufacturers is a plus.
You will:
- Create the visual framework for projects (packaging design, product, brand, retail)
- Prioritize design requests and projects and understands the time it takes to make each project happen
- Find solutions for workflow and creative output
- Manage the vendors and the occasional contractor
- Provide creative feedback
- Help determine how a concept is represented visually
- Develop budgets and timelines
- Offer design insight/strategy for digital
- Driven by branded design and creating packages that are irresistible experiences
- Naturally inclined toward design that is beautiful, delicate, and simply elegant
- Able to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues and internal clients, alike
- Obsessed with sustainable design
- Energized by juggling multiple projects, ranging from simple to complex
- Someone who thrives in a collaborative environment
- Able to handle a heavy workload, and to meet assigned deadlines
- Naturally curious, you ask questions, and are obsessed with form and function (you’re not afraid to design perfection on a budget)
- Detail oriented and efficient with your time: you should be obsessive about perfection but also know how to work on a deadline
- Known to have a strong grasp of what great looks and feels like
- An embodiment of Blue Bottle, with an exceptional understanding of our core values, visual aesthetic, company voice and goals
{these are non-negotiables, you must have the following in order to be considered}
- A strong portfolio
- 5+ years working as a graphic designer either in-house or agency level
- 3+ years working with structural and packaging design
- Proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop
- Meticulous attention to detail and quality are a must as you will manage the technical oversight of the design.
- An understanding of both large and boutique brands, and you have worked within brand, style, and production guidelines
- A well of inspiration (from a range of backgrounds and interests) to draw from
- An old-fashioned work ethic
- A love or respect for delicious coffee
- Relationships with sustainable vendors and manufacturers
- Expert knowledge of food and beverage packing design (FDA requirement knowledge, a serious plus)
