Job description
About Us:The Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse is a certified organic seed farm and retail seed company. We ship over 700 varieties of heirloom & open-pollinated seeds to home gardeners & small farmers across Canada, the U.S and internationally. Many of these varieties are grown on our farm in Crooked Creek, Ontario.
The Opportunity:
We have a unique opportunity for someone with the right combination of farm and office skills.
From now until April, you will work primarily inside – picking & packing seed orders, answering the phone & providing excellent customer service and co-ordinating our seed rack program, as well as pitching in wherever needed. You will work closely with a small, dynamic team to ensure customer orders are filled quickly and accurately.
From April to October, you will work outside – seeding, potting up, planting, weeding and helping in harvesting & cleaning our seed crops. We have just expanded to the neighbouring farm, so you will be integrally involved in starting the growing operations there from scratch, including building repairs, soil preparation, swale construction and whatever else is required.
This is an 11-month contract position with possibility of extension. This is a wonderful opportunity to be exposed to all aspects of a successful seed business, from growing high quality seed to marketing and retailing that seed.
Qualifications:
- attention to detail is paramount
- able to work quickly and accurately to meet tight deadlines
- ability to work well alone and with others
- farm experience
- able to establish excellent rapport with customers and to provide informed answers to questions they have about varieties and growing
- able to perform hard physical labour for extended periods in all kinds of weather conditions
- computer skills
The position will start at 1-2 days a week, learning the administrative work, until the end of December. Starting in January, the position will be full-time (37.5 hours/week) for the remainder of the contract.
