Job description

DESCRIPTION

Food52, a fast-growing, James Beard Award-winning online food community and crowd-sourced and curated recipe hub, is currently looking for a Test Kitchen Chef to work with our kitchen team, creative team, sales team, and executives to cook for photo shoots, events, and meetings, and to test and develop recipes for our site, books, and other media. Our kitchen team is small, a mix of full- and part-time and works at our New York City headquarters. This role will involve plenty of cooking, an ever-changing environment, and a friendly team that hungrily awaits the opportunity to devour your creations.

Responsibilities:

- Working with a small team of fellow cooks to prepare and style recipes for photo shoots for our site, cookbooks, social media, sales efforts, and marketing.

- Identifying and developing techniques and recipes that could help home cooks and collaborating with our editors to produce how-tos and other content.

- Managing our kitchens and pantries to keep them supremely organized, well-labeled, and clean.

- Developing menus (often with little notice) for meetings and events.

- Cooking for 2 people who are having a meeting one day, pulling off a 3-course dinner for 30 the next, and preparing 12 recipes for a photo shoot on the third day.

- Comfort doing everything from prepping mise to braising pork to icing a cake to mopping the floors.

- Working in a public environment, welcoming guests and touring them through the kitchen, and occasionally talking about your work with the media.

- Supporting our team in any way you can to bring our recipes and products to life.

REQUIREMENTS

- Experience in both cooking and pastry

- Familiar with the Food52 editorial voice and aesthetic

- Excellent organization skills. Fastidious. Obsessive attention to detail

- Cooks according to seasons, obsessively follows local producers, and spends a lot of time at greenmarkets

- Loves food, appreciates the importance of home cooking and cooking with the seasons

- Cheerful under pressure

- Excellent communication skills

- A+ multi-tasker and juggler of responsibilities big and small

- Interested in and engaged with social media like Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest

- Loves problem-solving and collaborating to drive Food52 forward

- Thinks big picture but is also on top of the nitty gritty (dishes, shopping, setting tables, taking out the garbage)

- Comfortable with the realities of working for a startup: working long hours and occasional weekends

- A good sense of humor (i.e. you think we're funny)
