Intern: Content tagging

  • Date Posted June 12, 2011
  • Location San Francisco, CA
  • Category Media
  • Job type Internship/Apprentice

Job description

Punk Domestics is seeking an eager, eagle-eyed intern to take on a substantial, time-intensive but supremely important project.

Since launching in July 2010, Punk Domestics has grown to reach a growing audience of approximately 30K pageviews/month, with over 11K unique visitors and supports an active community of over 3,300 fans on Facebook and nearly 2,000 followers on Twitter. In that time, we have accrued well over 1,000 posts from hundreds of contributors. During that time, some things changed as the site grew and adapted. Consequently, many posts are incorrectly or not optimally tagged for efficient post search & retrieval.

Here at Punk Domestics we’re looking for someone with a hunger for knowledge and unwavering attention to detail to comb through the site submissions and update past contributions with standard tagging protocol.

This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in breaking into online media, particularly food media, and most especially if you have a profound interest in the DIY food movement, home food preservation or slow food in general. In the course of this project you will read over 1,000 posts from experts and passionate amateurs in the field who are sharing recipes, techniques and tools on everything from canning toforaging, cheese making to keeping chickens in the city, and much more.

If desired, the intern could also contribute bylined blog posts to Punk Domestics on relevant topics, subject to vetting and scheduling.

This is not a paid internship, but we will happily negotiate with professors to qualify the work for college credit; or, this is a great opportunity for anyone interested in aligning themselves with one of the hottest trends in the food world right now. This is an excellent summer project for an ambitious communications, journalism, agriculture or culinary student with knowledge of online media and an interest in foodways both old and new.

Required skills:
  • Familiarity with online authoring interfaces/content management systems (CMS). The site is on Drupal, but experience with WordPress, Typepad, Blogspot and others is applicable.
  • Strong sense of order and ability to associate content by logical keywords.
  • Foundational understanding of the principles of food preservation and a profound hunger to learn more.
  • Fastidious attention to detail, including grammar and spelling, publication dates and other minutiae.
