Job description
THE ORGANIZATIONAdded Value is a non-profit organization promoting the sustainable development of Red Hook by nurturing a new generation of young leaders. We work towards this goal by creating opportunities for the youth of South Brooklyn to expand their knowledge base, develop new skills and positively engage with their community through the operation of a socially responsible urban farming enterprise.
Added Value carries out its mission by operating two urban farms and a community composting program in partnership with other local organizations and City agencies. Programs include a CSA, Farm Stand, Farm Based Learning initiative with local elementary schools, Youth Empowerment Program, service projects with partners such as New York Cares, and Urban Agriculture and Composting job training in partnership with Green City Force.
THE POSITION
Added Value seeks a dynamic leader who has the strategic acumen, intuition, and energy to provide leadership and management that will allow Added Value to continue to grow and develop, to ensure all aspects of the organization are functioning optimally, and to serve as Added Value’s chief public spokesperson who, in collaboration with the board of directors, develops and fulfills the
organizational mission and strategic goals and objectives.
After an award winning thirteen years of progress, Added Value’s visionary founder has moved on to new challenges. The Board of Directors and an Interim Executive Director are managing the organization along with two staff members. The New Executive Director will have an opportunity to direct an organization that is growing and evolving.
Responsibilities
• Provide leadership and direction for organizational mission, goals and objectives, and short- and long-range strategy.
• Manage a farm and compost programs with an emphasis on food justice, in partnership with NY City agencies and local organizations.
• Create and maintain effective systems to track programmatic efforts, and regularly evaluate program components, so as to measure successes that can be effectively communicated to the board, funders, and other constituents.
• Actively engage and energize volunteers, board members, event committees and partnering organizations.
• Develop, maintain, and support a strong Board of Directors; seek and build board involvement
in order to maintain transparency and to allow board to fulfill its governance duties.
• Prudently manage the organization's resources with the bookkeeper and Board Treasurer.
• Develop and recommend yearly budget for Board Approval.
• Lead, coach, develop, and retain high-performance staff and management team.
• Cultivate and nurture the relationships with our current partners and potential donors.
• Develop and implement all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of strengthening organizational brand.
• Build strategic external partnerships that help the organization generate financial resources.
• Develop and advance annual fund raising plan.
• Formulate and implement organizational policies and procedures.
• Serve as chief spokesperson and advocate for Added Value.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree required.
• Passionate about youth development and elevating Added Values role in growing youth leadership around food justice issues.
• Strong fund raising skills and experience with a broad variety of funders.
• Persuasive and dynamic public speaker.
• Organizational development, leadership, and management experience at the senior or executive level in a nonprofit environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Sound knowledge of and experience developing and managing budgets and financial management systems.
• Ability, willingness and experience in cultivating and sustaining relationships.
• Experience collaborating with board of directors.
• Well-established network of funders, community groups, and other stakeholders.
• Extensive cultural sensitivity to socio-economic and political factors contributing to students' backgrounds and histories.
• Experience working with urban agriculture and with youth involved with food justice.
• Passionate about community organizing with a focus on diversity and inclusion.
• Knowledge of contracting with city government and other stakeholders. Added Value works closely with the NYC Departments of Parks & Recreation and Sanitation as well as the NYC Housing Authority.
• Entrepreneurial with an ability to succeed with modest infrastructure.
