Job description

Thirty-five acre budding self-sustaining homestead located twenty minutes south of Cincinnati Ohio. We have openings for two interns this summer, starting as early as the first week of May 2014.

Goals for 2014 include: complete an irrigation system, build a fire pit, finish building our new root cellar, expand the orchard, and convert some of the vegetable garden to berries. You will help in the greenhouse, the high tunnel, and the gardens with planting, mulching, irrigation, and weeding, and with harvesting, cooking, and preserving. We’ll build walls using slipforms and stones from the creek, and other types of green building methods using reclaimed and local materials.

Depending upon when you are here, in addition to learning to garden both annuals and perennials, you will learn about building, watering, sugaring, firewood, trees, alien invasive plants, weed suppression, and how to grow and harvest leafy greens in the dead of winter.  You will learn how to make herbal infusions, pasture hens for eggs, how to split wood by hand, and how to preserve foods by freezing, canning, dehydrating, and fermenting.  You will learn how to process poultry.  If you wish, you will learn how to harvest food from the woods like wild leeks, mushrooms, garlic mustard, paw paws, and deer.

I expect a flexible 40 hour work week in exchange for a wholesome learning experience, room and board, and $100 per month stipend. The only must-haves are fitness, enthusiasm, a positive attitude, maturity, good health, and basic cooking skills. We welcome people of all faiths and non-faiths, ethnicities, and sexual orientations. We prohibit tobacco and drug use anywhere on the property.

Monday through Friday we take turns making lunch for the two or three of us, and we dine together.  You will prepare all other meals in your own full kitchen.  The food we provide for you will include venison, chicken, veggies, fruit, maple syrup, etc. Your food will come from the garden and the woods, plus we supply all of the basics, like pasta, bread, rice, oatmeal, cheese, milk, spices, herbs, and meat.  You will eat well here but you'll do most of your own cooking.
