Produce Distribution Assistant

  • Date Posted January 25, 2014
  • Location Brooklyn, NY
  • Category Agriculture / Business
  • Job type Part-Time

Job description

We are looking for a distribution assistant, who will help out with our delivery route within NYC, product organization at our warehouse in the Bronx, and a weekly produce pick-up outside the city.  You will meet us at our warehouse to prepare and load the produce on a given delivery day, and will either run the morning delivery route on your own (driving) or you'll ride shotgun (helping to unload at each stop).  You will also be responsible for a 5-hr round-trip drive once/week.

About Myers Produce:
Myers Produce is a young regional produce distributor based in Hardwick, Vermont.  We purchase fresh produce directly from farmers in Northern Vermont and Western Mass, and distribute this produce within New York City.  We take orders from our customers by phone or email, and deliver twice/week from our warehouse space in New York.  As a new, independent, for-profit company, we are focused on supporting the agricultural communities of the Northeast by increasing farmers’ access to the population of New York City.

The ideal candidate for this position:
  • Is a true morning person
  • Is observant, has excellent attention to detail
  • Understands how critical their role is to Myers Produce
  • Adapts well to the changes and surprises that are inevitable in our line of work
  • Keeps their cool: patient in traffic, safe driver
  • Likes physical work
  • Is interested in our mission
  • Thinks creatively
  • Has a smart phone (not required, but it's helpful).
  • Is interested and excited to put in a few extra hours when there is extra work to be done

Requirements:
  • Clean driving record
  • Ready to drive our mid-sized cargo van
  • Very comfortable driving in NYC & Brooklyn
  • Food handling experience
  • Patience with a very new business that is still in early development - our system changes by the week, and we'll need you to be excited by these developments, not impatient with them.

Perks:
It is important to us that every member of our team be familiar with the farmers we work with, and the food we are selling.  When you start your time with us, we'd like to take you up to Vermont for a few days, and introduce you to our farmers and the community where most of our produce comes from.  The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is an incredible place, and is at the heart of our operation.  We want to make sure you know the people who have encouraged us to do what we do!

Future:
There is a distinct possibility that this position could turn into a full-time job over the course of the summer, as we explore more markets, expand our list of suppliers, and as the availability of produce explodes with the season.  We are not making any promises, but if you would be interested in ultimately working with us full-time, please mention that in your application.  You will still be fully considered even if you would not be interested/able to work with us full-time in the future.
