Job description

We are excited to offer this unique and thrilling opportunity to learn the ins and outs of hyper local farm food through our cooking internship. We are seeking an inexhaustibly creative and hungry person to be our farm cook for the summer. Let's face it; we're too darn tired at the end of a work day to give proper care to our beautiful produce in the frying pan, and we need just the right person to help us appreciate our own bounty. Grilled peaches with homemade sweet goat cheese? Yes, please! Potato tarragon pie made with our own lard? Absolutely! Enthusiastic eaters guaranteed.

We are a small family farm in central Connecticut that produces delicious chemical free produce as well as pork and eggs for home use. We have two dairy goats for personal milk supply. Press cider from our apples, or try making vinegar. Make wine from our Concord grapes, or beer from our own hops. Grind corn, make sausage, explore cheesemaking, build a wood fired oven and make bread. Preserve tomatoes, make jam, enter the county fair! This is your opportunity to dive into sourcing and cooking food with an almost unlimited amount of independence, while enjoying the resources that the farm provides.

Your daily responsibilities would be milking the goats, cooking breakfast, lunch (sometimes) and dinner, food shopping and sourcing, and weekly restaurant deliveries. You will have one full day off per week. This schedule would leave you with plenty of down time to pursue food projects such as canning and preserving, fermenting, and experimentation, leaving us with little waste and lots of food in the freezer for the winter months. Your overall task would be to make the most of everything the farm has to offer. You will of course be able to take home a share of the bounty.

After this internship you can expect to have experience with keeping farm animals for home use, cheesemaking, wood fire cooking, basic bee keeping, menu planning and purchasing, a range of cooking techniques, and whatever other culinary mischief you can get into with farm, sea, and forage at your fingertips. We are experienced cooks, hunters, foragers, and growers, eager to share our extensive knowledge as well as assist you with learning techniques none of us has ever tried before.

We are a young couple and we will also have a farming intern, so four people (including you) total, plus frequent guests. In exchange for your yummy food, we offer a private room with a bathroom shared with the other intern, wifi in your room, a generous food budget, and a monthly stipend. The internship starts in June and would go until the end of October
. Professional cooking experience is not required, but a solid knowledge of the basics is an important jumping off point, and a healthy interest in all of the homesteading arts is essential. Our most important criteria is a good attitude and curiosity. Since you'll be living on the farm and using our kitchen, someone with a sense of organization would be appreciated. We think this will be really fun!

You must have a clean driving record, a valid license, and your own transportation. Farm errands run with your vehicle will be compensated.
