Job description

Preserving Place is a cooking classroom, specialty food shop and purveyor of house made, small batch food in jars and supplies for the do-it-yourself home cook, as well as a gathering place for the local good food community interested in preserving our food heritage in our place on the map, Atlanta, Georgia.  Our mission is to preserve our Southern food heritage and local foodshed and serve as the go-to place for food preservation in Atlanta.  By sourcing our ingredients from local farmers and promoting home food preservation, we will increase markets for our local farmers who can increase their profitability and grow more food. Summary description:  the “right hand” person assisting the President to make sure the retail part of the business is on track and operating properly, as well as manage the finances for the business  

Duties   

*reports to the President  

*responsible for managing inventory and ordering of all retail products as well as packaging needed for in-store and Internet sales
 
*price retail product and enter data into POS/RMS software from vendor invoices  

*oversee financial management and maintain financials by posting financial transactions daily, entering accounts receivable and accounts payable, writing checks and preparing monthly sales tax returns; ensure all farmers, vendors, service providers and contract obligations are paid in a timely manner  

*point of contact for outsourced payroll preparation company  

*supervise the presentation and merchandising of all products for sale in the store  

*maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the store (retail space, kitchen and back of house)  

*provide knowledgeable, courteous service to customers and ensure retail sales team does the same  

*manage retail sales team and enforce all company policies as set forth in the employee manual  

*work with the President to prepare weekly work schedules for the retail sales team and the cook  

*responsible for fulfillment of customer orders made through the company’s website  

*assist with creation and management of food production processes and timetables by working with the President and the cook to plan schedule for on-site food preservation and identify what food items and jars/bottles are needed and when  

*direct and maintain safety to ensure safety of guests and staff members by communicating and enforcing safety protocols, investigating complaints and accident reports, and keeping facilities and equipment in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations  

*manage and track COGS  

*manage relationships with the store’s service providers and make sure they are timely performing scheduled work  

*prepare Word documents, Powerpoint, and Excel spreadsheets as needed  

*provide technology assistance by ensuring security equipment, overhead projector, POS system, stereo system and any other technological device run properly; able to fix technology issues at first level  

Qualifications  

*Bachelor’s degree  

*prefer experience in at least one home food preservation technique (hot water bath canning, pressure canning, fermentation, dehydration, baby food making, etc.)  

*prefer at least one year of related retail experience  

*proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and QuickBooks  

*must have demonstrated proficiency and working knowledge of financial management processes, including bookkeeping/purchasing/invoicing, along with work experience in same  

*you are from anywhere but must have a genuine affection for, and understanding of, the American South; enthusiastic knowledge of the region’s food traditions and modern evolution; and radiate the courtesy, friendly hospitality, and love of the land, good food and a good time that exemplifies the South  

*proficient in English, both written and spoken word   *proficient at fundamental math skills, including ratio conversion  

*excellent organizational, planning and project management skills  

*experience in managing a team is a plus  

*must be punctual and reliable  

*ability to work independently and effectively with little supervision  

*ability to maintain confidential information with the utmost integrity  

*ability to lift up to 40 pounds
