Job description

Sawkill Farm is an 85 acre small-scale, diverse farm in the Hudson Valley that raises livestock (cows, pigs, sheep, poultry) on pasture and grows organic vegetables.  We sell direct to consumers at farmers’ markets and from our on-farm store which opened this past year.  This winter, we are building a NYS Ag & Markets 20-C commercial kitchen in order to cut & wrap meat, to produce value-added goods from our meat & vegetables, and to prepare food for sale at our farm store.  We are looking for an experienced chef, butcher & production manager to lead development and operation of this enterprise.

Our ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in whole animal butchery, management of a kitchen, and production of farm to table food.  This position will also require work with livestock and vegetables, so an interest in farming is required although experience in this area is not.  Additionally, this position requires that you work well with the public, both at the store and at our farmers markets.

This is a ground floor position in a quickly expanding operation.  The ideal person for the job will have the desire to create and manage a unique enterprise and to play a significant role in the development of the farm business.  We are looking for someone who is talented, passionate, self motivated, entrepreneurial and whose personality clicks with the owners. 

Required Skills & Experience:
  • Whole animal butchery
  • Knowledge of NY Ag & Markets, NYS-DOH & USDA standards and processes
  • Experience in a production kitchen
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to lead and organize kitchen operation including inventory and finances
  • Demonstrated cooking ability, specifically in regards to meat, sausages, smoked products, stocks
  • Cleanliness and regular maintenance of equipment

Other requirements:
  • Valid drivers license
  • Passion for local food, farming and the desire to learn more
  • Applicants must live in or be willing to relocate to the Hudson Valley 

This position will begin in Spring of 2014 with the exact start date being flexible.
