Summary:
The GrowHaus is an urban agriculture nonprofit in Denver's Elyria-Swansea neighborhood with the mission of creating community-driven, neighborhood-based food systems by serving as a hub for urban agriculture, education, business development and job training.

The Director of Food Distribution is a position for a dedicated, creative and multi-talented individual to manage Mercado De Al Lado, the weekly food box program initiated by The GrowHaus in 2013. The Goals of Mercado De Al Lado are to provide nutritious, affordable and culturally-appropriate food to Elyria-Swansea residents while supporting local farms.

The Director of Food Distribution is responsible for promoting the program to residents, sourcing ingredients for the weekly boxes, coordinating weekly box distribution, ensuring financial health of the program, complying with relevant regulations, and managing associated interns and volunteers. This position will start at 24 hours/week, but is expected to transition to a full-time position by the end of 2013.

Responsibilities:

Promotion and Outreach
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners
  • Plan and execute promotional activities to market boxes to Elyria-Swansea and Globeville residents
  • Plan and execute promotional plan to market sponsorship boxes to the general public
Ingredient Sourcing
  • Solicit and respond to customer feedback about food box contents
  • Develop partnerships with new ingredient suppliers and maintain relationship with existing ones
  • Place weekly orders from suppliers and ensure proper storage of ingredients
Distribution
  • Coordinate weekly food sorting
  • Run weekly box pickup at The GrowHaus
  • Coordinate and launch other food box dropoff sites as necessary

Financial management
  • Keep a detailed budget of revenue and expenses
  • Engage in periodic business evaluation to ensure financial sustainability of program

Regulations and food safety
  • Ensure acceptance of SNAP and WIC
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures regarding food safety

Intern and volunteer management
  • Manage “street team” to promote program to residents
  • Work with relevant staff to coordinate volunteers for weekly box sorting

Job Skills and Requirements:
  • Necessary skills/qualifications:
  • Passion for food access and local food systems
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • 1-3 years experience in community organizing, public health, supply chain management, food retail or other related field
  • Strong work ethic
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multitask and accomplish goals under pressure
  • Highly responsible, with strong attention to detail
  • Flexible work hours including weekends and evenings
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Google spreadsheets, Open Office or other spreadsheet software
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including volunteer management and working with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds

Desired skills/qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in social work, business, public health or other related field
  • Experience working with immigrant populations and/or other underserved communities
  • Proficiency with online sales platforms and/or database management
  • Permaculture Design Certificate
