Duke Campus Farm Fellow

Job description

The Fellowship is responsible for furthering the mission of the Duke Campus Farm in two primary areas: 
1) Increasing access to local, organic, and sustainable food on campus, primarilyfrom the Duke Campus Farm; and
2) Maintaining an educational space that provides the Duke community with opportunities to engage with the study of food, economics, agriculture, human culture, and the environment through academic inquiry and extracurricular activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
Farm Operation & Produce Sales - 50% 
  • Support the Program Coordinator/FarmManager in the daily operations of the Duke Campus Farm, including but not limited to crop planting and harvesting, soil management, pest management, weeding, and irrigation.
  • Support the Program Coordinator/Farm Manager in the harvest, preparation and delivery of farm produce to designated eateries in coordination with Duke Dining and Bon Appetite, as well as assist with CSA and farmers' markets when applicable.
  • Assist in maintaining detailed tracking of crop selection, planting locations, crop volumes, and crop revenues (volumes, prices and eateries).
  • Assist in maintaining a record of valuable information gained through contracting with mentor farmers, experimenting with crops and soil amendments and other lessons-learned through farm operation.  

Communications - 25%
  • Maintain Duke Campus Farm website with up-to-date background information, news, opportunities to get involved, etc.
  • Manage Farm blog including making regular posts and overseeing schedule of student posts to blog, as well as cross-posting with Sustainable Duke, Food@Duke, etc.Disseminate news and events concerning the farm through social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs, photo website), including workdays, workshops, special events, and blog posts.
  • Engage students, faculty, staff and the broader community in attending workdays through communications with student, employee and community groups. 
  • Respond to all inquiries in dukecampusfarm e-mail account (including questions, carpool requests, etc.) and communicate with Farm Manager about inquires when necessary.

Community Outreach - 25% 
  • Manage regular farm workshop offerings including organizing and scheduling workshops, managing registrations and reminders, and organizing carpooling.
  • Support the Program Coordinator/Farm Manager in directing volunteer activities at workdays when necessary and with special events like farm tours for classes and community groups.
  • Collaborate with the Program Coordinator/Farm Manager to organize and advertise additional outreach events including seasonal celebrations, and other special events.
  • Assist in the development and operation of extracurricular educational programs such as an alternative spring break and pre-orientation programming.
  • Communicate and collaborate with community organizations and other entities interested in engaging with the farm, such as other schools within The Duke Endowment Campus Sustainability Initiative.
Competitive Qualifications
  • Work requires communication and analytical skills normally acquired through a 4-year college education.
  • Academic background in agricultural or food studies and experience with food porduction is preferred.
  • Valid NC Driver's License to operate farm vehicle a must.
Education
Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skillsgenerally acquired through completion of a bachelor's degree program.
