Part-time Development Manager
THE SYLVIA CENTER

The Sylvia Center is a farm-to-table program that inspires young people to discover good nutrition on the farm and in the kitchen.   Year-round programs are held in community centers throughout New York City. Our after-school programs teach students about where their food comes from, how it is grown, and how to cook delicious simple meals with seasonal, local produce.  On-farm programs (May through October) connect children and young adults with the origins of food as they taste their way around our uniquely designed children’s garden at Katchkie Farm in Kinderhook, NY. Students harvest vegetables and cook them into a fresh meal they eat while looking out over the farm and fields.  

Position Summary:
The part time Development Manager (PTDM) will report directly to the Executive Director, and will grow and diversify the funding base of The Sylvia Center. The PTDM will manage organizational fundraising, focusing on building fundraising capacity related to corporate sponsorship and individual donations maintaining and building upon The Sylvia Center’s current annual budget. The PTDM will be responsible for reaching goals in the broad areas of foundation support, government grants, corporate sponsorship, individual donations, and special events revenue.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Create and implement annual development plan and strategy.
  • Working with the ED, set goals and establish clear metrics that drive current and sustainable fundraising performance.
  • Develop, lead and prioritize key actions, which will assist the ED in cultivating, soliciting and nurturing current and potential donors.
  •  ngage board and key stakeholders to support fundraising efforts.
  • Cultivate and expand SC engagement with and funding from corporate sponsors and partners .
  • Lead the planning and implementation of a strategy for individual giving to reach  5% of organization’s annual budget.
  • Research potential grant opportunities. Write grant proposals and reports for private foundations, local, state and federal agencies.
  •  rganize and oversee fundraising activities and events.
  • Manage correspondence and relationships with corporations, foundations, individual donors, and board members.
  • Develop and implement marketing and public relations strategies to support fundraising initiatives.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proven track record of successful fundraising in the non-profit sector or service  industry
  • Experience with corporate sponsorship and individual donor fundraising.
  • Proven success in grant writing (foundations and government grants)
  • Proven organizational and planning skills with the ability to manage a high volume of work and prioritize effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors, key stakeholders and members
  • High Proficiency in database management
  • Ease and confidence to represent The Sylvia Center’s programs and mission to prospective funders
  • Demonstrated ability to build alliances and gain consensus with diverse stakeholders
  • Comfortable working under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interest in Farm to Table, nutrition, public health, local food systems, or sustainable agriculture.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • College degree plus five years development experience, in a service industry or with a non-profit
  • Strong verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively
  • Proven track record of completion, accuracy and timeliness in past professional positions.  
Compensation:
Compensation for this position is hourly based on 15-20 hours/week.
