Foothills Pilot Plant is the only non-profit, USDA-inspected poultry processor in the US. Serving independent growers throughout Southern Appalachia, we work primarily with pasture-based enterprises. Our very small facility operates on an as-needed basis in conjunction with local inmate work-release programs. We are AWA-approved and seek to provide our services in the most respectful, humane way possible.

Position is for a Personal Assistant to the General Manager of the Plant. Qualified candidates will be comfortable working in a hot, dirty, noisy environment where poultry and rabbits are slaughtered, eviscerated, and packaged for growers. While no hands-on processing experience is required, participation in all aspects of processing activities is expected. Candidate must be flexible, sharp, and efficient. Additionally, candidates will be expected to:

*interact constructively with a diverse community of growers
*maintain a professional relationship with work-release staff
*monitor/maintain a high standard of welfare and respect in animal handling and processing activities
*perform basic office and data entry work
*prepare literature/releases for press and clients
*assist in recordkeeping and maintenance tasks
*perform research tasks
*assist the GM in all other aspects of plant operation and management as required

While no college degree is required for this position, collegiate-level communication skills are very necessary. Applicant should have experience with MS Office; Quickbooks and/or MS Access is even better. Some experience in agriculture, food service, and/or nonprofits is helpful. A successful completion of this internship will prepare the intern for future food processing facility management serving independent small farms.

Position runs from March 1 to December 15, 2013. Compensation includes a monthly stipend plus performance bonus during busy season. Marion, NC is located about 40 miles east of Asheville; while commuting from Asheville to the plant is possible, the plant does open at 7am for processing and interns may be required to arrive at that time.
