Company description
We own a small diversified ecological vegetable farm and, until recently, a wood-fired bakery. The bakery produced sourdough breads, croissants, and a line of packaged crackers, cookies, and cereals made with 100% local grain (“dry goods”). We are looking for a business to buy this line of goods.
Our dry goods line is created in partnership with the Common Grain Alliance, a non-profit that shares our mission of supporting non-commodity grain growers and millers in the Mid-Atlantic, which we also co-founded. To raise the profile of hard-working grain professionals in the consumer's mind, the name of the grower and miller are on the front of every box. Product flavors are kept simple and familiar to feature the full flavor of the grain. In this way, this product line drives change in the regional food system by taking everyday foods and elevating the eating experience.
business description
Our dry goods line includes the recipes and processes for six products, tools & supplies, access to a network of buyers and suppliers built up over eight years, and startup support.
Marketing & Sales
We developed this line of products to raise consumer awareness of the grain that forms the basis of most people’s diets. The products are simple and familiar, but made extraordinary by the quality of grain they are made with. This grain is traceable to a farm in the Mid-Atlantic region via a local stonemill. The short, non-commodity value chain of farmer-miller-baker is driven home by naming those upstream participants on the packaging, and we are co-branded with the Common Grain Alliance (commongrainalliance.org), a grain non-profit we co-founded. We have grown this arm of our business with very little intentional marketing, so we believe the potential for growth is enormous.
Opportunities
When we started working on this line of products in 2018, we saw a large hole in the local food market; snacks and cereals made with local grains were hard to find. That hole is, if anything, larger now. A major cracker competitor with wide regional distribution closed permanently in summer 2024 (Firehook Crackers), and a major granola competitor got bought out that same year (Hudson Henry) and has moved its production to Minnesota. There is no comparable product line in the Mid-Atlantic, which includes large markets in the Baltimore / D.C. area. This is also a relatively inexpensive business acquisition, making it a great opportunity for an ambitious food entrepreneur with not a lot of capital.
