Hearty Roots Community Farm is a family farm based in Clermont, NY, in the Hudson Valley. The farm is run by Ben and Lindsey Lusher Shute along with a great crew of hard-working farmers, using sustainable and organic practices to grow the freshest, healthiest, tastiest food for our community. We are a first-generation farm, and our land base has grown over the past 20 years from just 3/4 of an acre of rented land, to now over a hundred acres of vegetable fields and pastures.
Job description
Seeking someone who is experienced in managing sheep to oversee our small flock, with an option to participate in broader livestock operations at our diversified farm. This position can be part-time or full time, depending on your availability. Scheduling options include 2-3 full days per week, 4-5 mornings per week, or full time.
Responsibilities include:
- Caring for our 25 ewes and their lambs, including: rotation through 70 acres of pasture, ensuring access to minerals and water, monitoring animal health, hoof trimming, assistance with lambing in May.
- Caring for our flock of 1500 laying hens, including: rotation through pasture, feed ordering, maintaining mobile coops and feed/water infrastructure, raising new chicks, egg washing and packing.
- Caring for 15 feeder pigs during the spring / summer / fall, including: providing feed + water, rotations through the woods, and animal health.
When livestock duties are completed, the livestock coordinator may have the opportunity to participate in work on our vegetable crew.
The ideal candidate:
- has experience with sheep and rotational grazing, moving fences, handling animals, and monitoring animal health;
- has at least one season of experience working on farms with livestock, and/or an education related to raising livestock and pasture management;
- is positive, enthusiastic, and has the ability to see the big picture while paying close attention to detail;
- is able to work all day on their feet lifting heavy things whether it’s raining, sweltering or beautiful out;
- is able to lift 50 lbs.
Hours: Part-time (~3 days/wk or 4-5 mornings per week), or full time (to include more livestock chores and possible work with vegetables or at our farm market. Year round or seasonal will be considered.
Compensation:
- $19-20 per hour (depending on experience)
