Company description
We are a women-run vegetable, herb and (we dabble) flower farm outside of Nashville striving to steward the land by taking care of soil using no till methods, cover cropping, and increasing soil organism diversity by creating favorable conditions and compost teas. We are nerds for good systems and organization and we are looking for crew members who are excited about growing food and creating systems that support the health of the soil and the people stewarding the land.
At Sugar Camp Farm we strive to bring you high quality produce while farming as sustainably as possible. We are a very small family farm with up to 1 acre under cultivation at peak season. We grow a variety of vegetables and herbs for market, chefs and other local organizations.
Job description
We currently have one opening for a part time (4 days a week, 32 hours) farm crew member from April until December. The job is located in Ashland City, TN just 25-30 min from Nashville.
The farm crew will learn most aspects of farming including greenhouse work, planting, field maintenance, harvesting, washing and packing, deliveries, cooking farm lunch for the crew, chicken care, and beyond. If a crew member has an interest in a particular aspect of daily farm operations, over time they may accrue more responsibility in that particular area.
The farm crew will receive a farm gear stipend, paid time off, lunch on the farm, and vegetables from the farm. As farm crew members don’t live on the farm, commuting to the farm is required. Each crew member will have a 1 month trial period at the end of which we will check in and see if we are all a good fit for one another. The position starts as soon as possible and ends in November/December. We can be flexible about dates. Work days are also flexible and we will work with the final crew line up to establish a schedule that works for everyone. Work hours are 8-4 with a paid lunch break in spring and fall and 7-3 or 6-2 in summer.
We are looking for candidates who pay attention to detail, are problem solvers, love teamwork, enjoy and appreciate food, have fun, can handle hard work in extreme weather conditions, are physically capable of lifting 50 pounds safely and repetitively, are good communicators, have a positive attitude, and are excited to learn! Previous farming experience is a plus but not a requirement! We’re willing to teach you if you’re motivated! In addition, we have 2 small children that may be around the crew occasionally, so crew members must be comfortable with kids (and if you’re interested in babysitting for more hours, let us know!). As we have just relocated our farm, it’s a perfect time for someone who is interested in farming to see how we are setting up our new place after several years experience.
