Job Overview
The market manager plays a vital role in the weekly operations of the Rittenhouse farmers’ markets and is the lead on-site advocate for the vendors. The manager is the representative of Farm to City to the producers and the public and must have positive and productive relationships with these groups.
Manager Hours and Schedule
The role is 15-20 hours per week.
On-site at the market:
Tuesdays: year-round 6 hours a week - 8:30am – 2:30pm
Saturdays: December through March: 8:30am-2:30pm
April through November: 7:30am – 2:30pm,
Non-market time:
Approximately 4-10 hours per week for market-related tasks and communications, check-in meetings with the director, hanging signs in preparation for each market day. Most of the off-site administrative work can be scheduled at the discretion of the manager.
The Market Manager
- Oversees and assists producers with market setup and end of market breakdown;
- Is available to producers during the market hours;
Is familiar with the market rules and producers’ product lists as the basis of decisions to resolve conflicts that may arise;
- Must be able to work outside in all kinds of weather;
- Monitors market for safe conditions;
- Takes notes and photos for the weekly newsletter and social media and collects email addresses from the customers;
- Hangs and takes down market signs;
- Submits a weekly report on the market day conditions and unresolved conflicts;
- Recruits, trains, and schedules volunteers; volunteers can cover shifts on manager’s requested days off or emergency absences.
Qualifications
- Management and customer service experience is necessary. Must have a smartphone to post to social media during market hours and a laptop or desktop for email communication;
- Ability to stand for long periods at a time, lift heavy objects;
- Experience making managerial decisions on the spot;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;
- Passionate about local food and familiarity with the local food movement;
- Experienced in using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, Facebook, and Instagram.
Compensation
this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
