Company description
Community FarmShare is a Montgomery County, MD based nonprofit working to create a thriving, connected food system that produces food, health and well-being for people who have the least access to healthy food options, while renewing and protecting the planet by supporting local small scale produce farmers.
Our four-fold impact model is designed to accomplish the following: Food insecure families access to fresh, healthy, nutrient dense seasonal produce otherwise not easily accessible. We believe that “food is medicine” and so to address inequities, we particularly aim to support food insecure families that have or are at risk diet related chronic disease, where healthy eating can make a significant difference in their lives. Community FarmShare recognizes that the quality of fresh produce is as important as quantity, and that local seasonal farm produce, harvested the same day as delivery, has a totally different nutritional profile than conventional wholesale produce shipped long distance. Local produce farmers benefit by earning retail income for the nutritious produce they grow. This is a critical part of our mission - supporting their farm businesses to thrive and therefore building a resilient, local, environmentally conscious food system for all local residents. Participating farmers use organic, certified naturally grown and regenerative farming practices, meaning that our earth is preserved by not adding harmful chemicals into the environment. Further, local food consumption keeps the carbon foot print low.
Community FarmShare aims to build community. We envision an “Agri-Culture of Care” where growers and all eaters connect. We build community through providing resources and educational discussions on topics relating to food insecurity, healthy eating, the value of local agriculture, etc., and by having events where all community members – food recipients, growers, donors, and volunteers come together.
Our Programs: Community FarmShare purchases nutrient dense farm produce from over a dozen local small scale organic, regenerative, and naturally grown vegetable and fruit farms farms and provides this produce to food insecure residents through our healthy food access programs. We operate through our aggregation food hub location in Derwood, MD with programming throughout Montgomery County. Through this model, we manage both our Farm to School Program (F2S) and our Food is Medicine (FIM) program (partnering with healthcare providers/community clinics and community based organizations) to bring a Food Is Medicine approach to addressing food insecurity in our communities. We operate 8 mobile “FARMacy” Markets throughout the county to deepen our healthy food access mission. The mobile market is located in various community locations at regularly scheduled days and times (near healthcare providers/community clinics and schools) to make our Food Is Medicine and Farm to School programs more accessible in communities where fresh produce access is otherwise difficult for residents to access.
