Who We’re Looking For
LOS TACOS No. 1 is seeking an experienced, organized, and enthusiastic Head of Construction to direct project management of all new Los Tacos No. 1 venue openings. The company expects to open 2-4 venues per year for the next several years, first in the NYC metro area and eventually outside of the NYC region. Oversight of these development projects, from the conceptual phase to opening, will be in the full purview of the Head of Construction. Los Tacos is seeking someone with the ability to professionalize the process, develop replicable store standards, create accountability systems for all stakeholders, and deliver store openings on-time and on-budget. This is an on-site position based at Los Tacos’ company headquarters in Manhattan as well as in the field at current and future build-out sites, and it will report to Director of Finance and Chief Operating Officer.
Responsibilities
- Manage all current and new construction projects in the Los Tacos No. 1 portfolio.
- Create, lead, and manage project management processes, meetings, and accountability systems to liaise effectively with architects, designers, expeditors, and contractors.
- Hire all needed consultants for construction projects, including expeditors, special inspections, architect of record, structural engineers, MEP engineers, and others as needed.
- Hire any needed direct subcontractors for construction projects, including for specialty equipment, fire suppression, low voltage, signage, kitchen equipment, and others as needed.
- Review design drawings at all stages (conceptual, SD, DD, CD, elevations, etc.) to confirm internal approval and anticipate potential issues.
- Perform weekly site visits to all currently open projects and spearhead daily communication with the general contractor.
- Monitor contractor performance to ensure projects stay on track and meet the expected quality and timelines.
- Oversee project budgets and schedules, working with internal and external teams to ensure milestones are achieved and resources are effectively allocated.
- Oversee, review and approve purchasing of all FF&E.
- Work with project management platforms to track project costs, create capital expenditure reports, forecast future needs, and maintain financial transparency across all projects.
- Review and approve invoices from contractors, vendors, and suppliers.
- Ensure that each project meets the company’s standards for brand alignment, quality, materials, and craftsmanship.
- Monitor compliance with local building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
- Identify and mitigate risks early in the project to avoid issues with budget, schedule, or quality.
- Collaborate with internal departments to ensure construction projects align with business needs and strategic goals.
- Maintain open and frequent communication between all stakeholders, ensuring clear expectations and smooth execution throughout the project lifecycle.
- Manage the project close-out process, ensuring final budgets are reconciled, reviews are conducted, and all documentation is complete.
- Conduct site inspections and resolve any remaining issues, including punch lists and warranty concerns.
- Ensure smooth hand-offs from construction to the facilities and operations teams upon completion with proactive and unwavering attention to immediate issue resolution.
- Perform post-project analysis to identify opportunities for process improvements in future projects.
- Develop standardized store specifications, estimating templates, and process standards for future projects.
- Assist the leadership team with development of future projects through site reviews, lease reviews, and preliminary cost estimates.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years prior experience in relevant construction or project management involving multiple parallel projects, or within multi-unit restaurant or retail food groups.
- Bachelor’s degree in Project Management, Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field preferred, but extensive relevant experience will be considered in lieu of formal education.
- Ability to perform the requirements and responsibilities of this position both in the field and at the Los Tacos corporate office.
- Ability to perform the requirements of the position with up to 8 hours/day standing, touring work sites, and/or traveling between work sites.
- Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Outstanding partnership, listening and negotiation skills with strong ability to build relationships at all levels of the organization
- Excellent communication, presentation, time management and facilitation skills.
- Strong proficiency in project management software, budget tracking systems, and other platforms directly relevant to construction management.
- Strong proficiency in all aspects of Microsoft Office Suite.
Compensation & Benefits
This position will have a total annual compensation in the range of $150K. In addition, this position will be eligible for the following benefits:
