Fresh International Gardens and Grow North Farm are agricultural programs that encourage wellbeing, expand food-access, and support small-business development in refugee communities. New arrivals to Alaska are welcome to participate in the Fresh International Gardens co-op to earn supplemental income, practice English-language skills, and access fresh vegetables, and Grow North Farm provides a space for agricultural entrepreneurs with a refugee background to launch or support their agriculture and food-based business. Both programs are made possible by Catholic Social Services’ Refugee Assistance and Immigration Services (RAIS).
Job description
The Refugee Enterprise & Agriculture Program (REAP) seeks to promote the well-being of Alaska’s refugee community by providing economic opportunities, job training, family support, and access to fresh food. This position is responsible for leading agricultural operations at Fresh International Gardens (FIG) and Grow North Farm (GNF). To learn more about FIG and GNF, please visit www.cssalaska.org/fig.
From January-April, this position will assist farmers from GNF with developing their growing plan for the upcoming season and lead seed starting and garden planning for the FIG program. They will also help teach agricultural education classes for FIG and GNF growers. During the growing season months of May-October, this position will lead the day-to-day agricultural operations of the FIG program at our various growing sites (seeding, irrigation, harvesting, washing, packaging, etc.). They will also support farmers at GNF with various technical assistance needs related to their businesses. From November-December, this position will support our value-added products operation and holiday sales. They will also be responsible for gathering and reporting on production data points from the growing season months.
This position is responsible for overseeing our agriculture production operations and working with clients to ensure FIG continues to be a supportive and safe environment to work, learn, and grow. They are also responsible for giving GNF farmers the tools and skills they need to succeed in their agriculture businesses.
Compensation
this position is: salaried, 50k-75k
