Job description
As Compost Site Operator, you will play a central, multifaceted role responsible for operating the production of high quality screened compost and soil blends according to established best management practices.
The routine work of compost site operations includes receiving feedstocks and amendments, mixing and building aerated static piles, and pile management. This includes regular equipment maintenance and proactive problem solving.
As the sole full-time operator of the site, the Compost Site Operator is also responsible for overseeing all general property maintenance and contributing to other projects related to site development, livestock management, garden installation, and on-farm events.
Essential functions:
- Safely operate company equipment and tools, including farm tractors, mixer wagons, front-end loaders, dump trucks, pickup trucks, dump trailers, chainsaws, wood splitters, pressure washers, and various power tools.
- Monitor and assess compost pile conditions, recording data and taking appropriate actions.
- Document work performed and maintain accurate records and reports related to operations.
- Inspect equipment regularly to ensure safe operating conditions and compliance with maintenance schedules.
- Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and basic repairs on equipment and tools.
- Assist mechanics with larger repairs and maintenance on company equipment as needed.
- Operate company vehicles to travel to various facilities and job sites as required.
- Drive company vehicles safely in all weather conditions and seasons.
- Inspect trailers containing food scraps and amendments for contamination.
- Maintain the compost pad and farm roads, including grading and other necessary maintenance.
- Perform product sampling and testing, ensuring that compost meets quality standards.
- Screen mature compost using a front-end loader and trommel screener.
- Load delivery vehicles, including GTG drivers, contracted trucks, and customer vehicles.
- Collect amendments from local farms using a loader and dump truck.
- Perform general facility cleaning and janitorial tasks.
- Respond to emergencies and take necessary action to resolve issues promptly.
- Manage licensure and approval processes.
- Report facility repair needs that fall outside of the Compost Site Operator's scope of work.

Requirements:
- Valid Maine Commercial Drivers License license
- Minimum 5 years of driving experience and ability to drive standard transmission truck
- Ability to lift 100 pounds safely, shovel heavy material for extended periods of time, execute semi-repetitive tasks over time.
- Fluency in English
- Familiarity with hand and power tools, air compressors, generators, and small motors
Basic carpentry and plumbing skills (i.e. comfortable with a drill and skill saw, plumbing fittings, etc.)
- Experience with agriculture, waste management, or heavy equipment operation
- Ability to perform entry-level work in the repair and maintenance of vehicles & equipment (or willing to learn)
