Company description
Deep Hollow Farm (DHF) is a ½ acre diversified, no-till, certified organic vegetable farm located in picturesque Chester, CT in the Connecticut River Valley. DHF is a first generation family farm heading into our 5th season. We sell our fantastic veggies at the renowned Sunday Chester Farmers Market, our on-farm store on Saturday mornings, as well as to several amazing restaurants and natural grocery stores. We strive to create a welcoming, peaceful, and fulfilling work environment where the contributions of each team member are essential and appreciated as we work toward a shared goal of truly sustainable local food production.
Job description
Crew members will be directly involved in nearly all aspects of the farm, including greenhouse propagation, bed preparation, planting, cultivation, harvesting, washing, processing and even delivering. The work is very diverse and our small scale means that we rarely spend more than a couple of hours on any one task. We do not use a tractor so nearly all work is done with hand tools- we’d rather listen to the birds then engines anyway! This is an incredible opportunity for someone interested in a career in agriculture (especially using bio-intensive, no-till methods) to learn hands-on alongside highly experienced and knowledgeable growers. That said, it is also a deeply enjoyable and rewarding job for someone simply seeking real community and a deeper connection with the planet.
While we grow and sell year round, our crew members generally work from early April to late November, with opportunities for part time work in the colder months. During the season we work Monday through Friday, 7:00am or 8:00am to 4:00pm with a break for lunch.
There is also the possibility for a crew member to work at the Chester Sunday Market on Sunday's from 8:30am to 1:30pm mid-June to mid-October. Hours on the farm could be reduced to take into account this extra work on the weekend, if desired.
Qualifications:
-Previous farm experience is a plus but is not required.
-Interest in farming, gardening or healthy food.
-Capable of performing physical work in a variety of temperature and weather conditions for extended durations, and able to lift 40 lbs.
-Able to commit to working the entire season.
-Willingness to learn and receive feedback about techniques and efficiency.
-Interest in working alongside others and maintaining a convivial attitude.
Compensation: Starting at 16$/hour depending on experience. Staff also have access to lots of free produce from the farm!
