Job description

PURPOSE: To oversee operations of a natural foods deli and cheese department; to meet the Co-op’s goals for sales, margin, labor, and customer service, ensuring the department contributes to the financial and social best interest of the Co-op; to promote the Co-op in accordance with its principles both in-store and in the community.

STATUS: Reports to General Manager; supervises kitchen workers and cheese buyer

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Customer Service

  • Treat people fairly, consistently and with respect.
  • Ensure efficient, informative and friendly service. according to established customer service vision and standards.
  • Treat staff and managers with consistency and fairness, in a style appropriate to a cooperative work environment.
  • Ensure that communications are clear, direct and respectful.
  • Ensure the integrity of Bluff Country Co-op’s values in decision-making and interactions with others.
  • Act as a model to all employees following the employee handbook.
  • Provide attentive and courteous customer service.

2. Daily Operations

  • Manage margin, price, and turns to achieve department’s financial goals.
  • Develop product mix to be seasonally appropriate and generate sales growth.
  • Purchase product following co-op’s values of prioritizing local and organic.
  • Plan attractive displays; ensure displays are full, replenished, and rotated.
  • Maintain accurate records for cost, price, and spoilage in the POS.
  • Process invoices in a timely fashion ensuring accuracy and applying for credit when inaccurate.
  • Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery.
  • Work with Marketing Manager and Merchandising Manager to execute promotions and cross merchandising.
  • Perform monthly inventory.

3. Supervision

  • Employ the integrity of Bluff Country Co-op’s values and Manager’s Code of Conduct in decision making and interacting with others.
  • Hire qualified applicants following established policy.
  • Ensure on-the-job training.
  • Organize meetings of department staff and communicate policy changes.
  • Document performance problems, provide coaching, feedback, and disciplinary conversations with staff.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and take corrective action as needed, up to and including termination.
  • Recommend pay raises within department payroll budget and co-op pay scale.

4. Safety & Security

  • Ensure department’s compliance with all state and federal food safety laws.
  • Maintain department equipment in working order. Troubleshoot problems and arrange for repairs following established procedures.
  • Assure department’s compliance with all policies in the Co-op’s Safety & Security binder.
  • Maintain Material Safety Data Sheets for all solutions used in the Co-op.

5. Other Duties

  • Participate in Management Team meetings and storewide meetings.
  • Maintain current Food Manager Certification with the State of Minnesota.
  • Serve as Manager on Duty as needed.
  • Visit other stores for price comparisons, product and merchandising ideas.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by General Manager.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to use computer keyboard, monitor, mouse, telephone, and various office equipment continuously.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to be present and working in assigned area for up to 3 hours without rest.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, kneel, climb stairs or ladder frequently.
  • Ability to reach above shoulder height occasionally.
  • Ability to talk and hear to communicate with customers.
  • Finger and hand dexterity with ability to grasp and hold items of different sizes.
  • Vision ability – close, distance, peripheral vision and depth perception.
  • Ability to read register screen and product and shelf labels.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work environment described here is representative of the conditions an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Frequent exposure to cold, hot, wet or humid conditions.
  • Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, hazardous materials ranging from natural to chemical (store products, cleaning products, scents from working in a public setting).
  • Exposure to and potential handling of fresh foods.
  • Handling objects that have been handled by the public.
  • May work occasionally in temperature extremes (walk-in freezer, outside warehouse, hot kitchen, etc.).
  • Noise level in the store is usually moderate to loud.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience running a restaurant, food service, catering or deli.
  • Supervisory experience--hiring, training, evaluating, directing.
  • Communication skills--good listener, can give clear instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands.
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Manual dexterity with hazardous equipment.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Ability to work in close quarters with other people.
  • Regular, predictable attendance.
  • Willingness to work weekends as needed.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and grow to meet the changing requirements of the job.

Compensation

this position is: hourly, varies DOE, $17.00 - $22.00
