Located in Nevada City, CA, Bluebird Farm was established in 2001, and specializes in high quality, nutrient dense, greens, culinary herbs, microgreens, floral design and fresh seasonal flowers. We are dedicated to using organic and sustainable growing methods to enhance the health of our land, build rich soil and provide the most delicious and beautiful food and flowers possible. We grow on 2 acres and sell to schools, through veggie and flower shares, food hubs, grocery stores, restaurants and direct to customer. We have been awarded a 3-year CDFA grant starting in January to support increased sales to schools as well as on-farm, farm to school education. 

Job description

Summary of Position

This is the perfect moment to bring your skills to take Bluebird Farm to the next level with guidance from a farm owner who has decades of farming experience. The production manager works closely with the farm owner to oversee the production of greens (salad mix, arugula, spinach etc.), microgreens and flowers for school meals, veggie box subscriptions, flower shares, restaurants and more. They will help make production decisions, follow the farm planting schedule and oversee crew daily tasks. Activities include bed prep, transplanting, weeding, irrigation, harvest, washing and packing produce, building, driving deliveries, managing crew members and delivering farm education through farm field trips and classroom visits. This position will work 7am-3pm (with potential for after-hour deliveries) Monday-Friday Jan-November.  Potential for year round employment.

 

Farm Work

·        Preps beds, Plants, cultivates, harvests, cleans, packs and delivers produce

·        Soil fertility management

·        Maintains professional relationships with buyers for robust farm sales. 

·        Supports with maintenance and care of farm equipment, CCOF certification and record keeping.

·        Oversees crew daily field work. 

·        Participates in farm to school education with fieldtrips.

·        Potential to help with floral design.

 

Skills and Qualifications

·        At least four years of production farming experience with leadership positions.

·        A love for farming and physical labor with high motivation (background in sports a plus).

·        Interest in farming as a career.

·        Enthusiasm for successful cultivation of high-quality produce.

·        Can work outside and adapt to variable weather conditions and has physical stamina.

·        Can lift equipment and materials necessary to complete farm tasks and activities

·        Strong interpersonal skills

·        Excellent communication skills

·        Leadership experience motivating and guiding a team

·        Basic plumbing, carpentry, and small engine maintenance skills a plus

·        Comfortable in a demanding, high paced, fun work environment.

·        Enjoys working with children

·        Has interest in both flowers and veggies.

Compensation

this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
