A chicken house and stable exist on the property, as well, which house a total of twelve chickens, one miniature donkey and two miniature horses. Being good stewards of the land lies at the soul of everything we do at High Meadow Farm, but we are learners in a learning process. We are looking for someone who shares our passion for agriculture, someone who is willing to teach us, learn alongside us, and grow with us, as we work to return the land closer to its historical farming roots.
Farmhand position:
We are looking for a dedicated team member who will manage the existing farming components on the property, as well as develop and execute future agricultural projects. Ideally, the candidate will have previous experience with farming and be knowledgeable (or be willing to educate themselves) in soil enrichment, composting, pest and disease control, irrigation, greenhouse propagation, crop planning and vegetable gardening, animal care, organic farming practices, orchard management, and record keeping. Responsibilities:
Year-round care and maintenance of organic vegetable and berry gardens including crop planning, planting, pruning, monitoring soil health, pest and disease control, harvesting and post-harvest handling of crops
Utilize the greenhouse and cold frames to plant seedlings during the winter for transplanting in the spring, as well as for growing greens during the winter months
Maintenance, care and cleanliness of the greenhouse, including the greenhouse kitchen
Care and maintenance of the orchard including seasonal pruning, soil health, monitoring for disease and pests, managing the organic spraying schedule, harvesting, and post-harvest handling of produce
Assist with care of animals on the property, (currently: chickens, miniature horses, miniature donkey and seasonal goats) which includes feeding, egg collection, monitoring animal health, and maintenance of animal shelters
Maintenance of the berry framing and netting
Monitor the berry and vegetable garden irrigation systems throughout the growing season and help coordinate winterizing of systems with Groundskeeper
Care and maintenance of the citrus plants including monitoring for disease and pests, and their seasonal movement in and out of the greenhouse
Occasionally help other team members with non-farming aspects of the property
Work alongside the family members and estate manager to develop future projects including but not limited to: addition of other animals, composting, cider and syrup production, and establishment of beehives on the property
Qualifications:
Minimum of 3 years farm management experience, or related field
Dedicated, reliable, responsible, and punctual
Strong communicator and good listening skills
Self-motivated, able to work independently as well as in groups
Ability to focus on quality and pay close attention to detail when performing tasks
