URJ Camp Newman is seeking a Sous Chef who is responsible for helping the Head Chef operate a cafeteria style commercial kitchen, both during our Summer Camp program, as well as during our year round Retreat Center business.
A primary function of this and every other job at a URJ camp is to ensure that each member, guest and visitor receives the highest caliber of service.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
The Sous Chef reports to Chef/Kitchen Manager and is responsible for the following:
· Help manage and guide other cooks to ensure successful food service.
· Help the Head Chef design and alter menus for both the Summer Camp and for the Retreat Center.
· Taking inventory, learning the ordering system, and helping to execute supply orders.
· Sets up and stocking food items and other necessary supplies.
· Prepares food items by cutting, chopping, mixing, and preparing sauces.
· Cooks food items by grilling, frying, sautéing, and other cooking methods to specified recipes and standards.
· Maintain cleanliness and complies with food sanitation requirements by properly handling food and ensuring correct storage.
· Cleans and sanitizes cooking surfaces at the end of the shift.
· Performs inventory checks and completes food storage logs.
· Cooks items in cooperation with the rest of the kitchen staff.
· Ensures that food comes out simultaneously, in high quality and in in a timely fashion.
· Complies with nutrition and sanitation regulations and safety standards.
· Maintains a professional approach with coworkers and campers.
· May have to modify meals for special dietary needs.
WHO YOU ARE & KEYS TO SUCCESS (THE MUST-HAVES):
To be successful in this job, you excel in the following areas:
· Experience as a line cook, restaurant cook, or prep cook. Preferably experience managing several other employees/coworkers.
· Understanding of various cooking methods, ingredients, equipment, and procedures.
· Familiar with industry best practices.
· Basic written and verbal communication skills
· Organizational skills
· Accuracy and speed in executing tasks
· Ability to work as a team member
· Follows directions and instructions

Pay: $24.00 - $25.00 per hour
