Company description

Bumbleroot Organic Farm is a certified organic vegetable and flower farm located just 10 miles from Portland, Maine. We grow 8 acres of vegetables and cut flowers for our CSA, farm stand, and wholesale accounts. Our summer crew is made up of 12-15 farmers who help in all aspects of the farm operation. Our mission is to connect people from our community with the land and food that sustains us, and to strengthen our local food system.

We are working to incorporate no-till practices and perennial crops into the farm. We use tractors to prep fields and planting, weeding, harvesting, and processing are all done by hand. Job description

FULL-TIME FARM CREW (SEASONAL)
Hours per week: 40+ hours a week
Start & End Dates: April - October
Schedule: Monday - Friday (Occasional Saturday shift)
Compensation: Starting at $18/hr, based on experience

Job Description:

Our seasonal crew members will focus on either cut flower production, vegetable production or flex between the two - please note your preference in your cover letter. Responsibilities for all roles relate to field production, harvest, processing/packing and customer service. Crew members will participate in all daily activities on the farm including (but not limited to):

 

  • seeding & potting up in our greenhouse & nursery
  • transplanting
  • weeding
  • trellising and deadheading
  • harvesting
  • processing/packing for CSA and wholesale orders
  • setting up and breaking down irrigation and frost protection
  • washing totes & flower buckets, general cleanup around the farm
  • interacting with customers during CSA pick-ups, farm stand and delivery driving shifts
     

Requirements:

Candidates must have at least one year of farming experience on a commercial farm. We are looking for candidates with the following attributes:

Commercial vegetable and flower farming can be fun and fulfilling, but it is very physically demanding and can be monotonous and repetitive. Self-motivation, stamina and a drive to work hard are key to this position. We value positivity, focus, speed, and attention to quality and detail in all of our team members.

Applicants must be able to lift 50lbs. and be on your feet for 6 hours straight. We do not offer housing so reliable transportation to and from the farm is necessary (we are located 25 minutes from downtown Portland), along with a valid driver’s license for driving farm vehicles in the field and on delivery routes.

Work Environment & Schedule:

The job will be 8-9 hours per day, 5 days per week (M-F) with a one hour unpaid lunch break. You will be expected to work one Saturday shift per month. Start times are early on harvest days during peak season (6am, 2 days per week), and other weekday shifts are 7:00am - 4:00pm. We work in all weather conditions. 

Bumbleroot's daily field operations are led by Bumbleroot's owners and managers with whom you will work closely on a daily basis. There will be occasional independent work but most of your time will be spent working in teams to complete a variety of tasks.

We pay overtime and we offer paid time off and paid holidays among other farm benefits (a workers compensation package, food and flowers from the farm, etc).

Compensation

this position is: hourly, $15-20/hr
