POSITION TITLE: Chef Instructor, Dual Instruction Culinary Program
REPORTS TO: Director of Programs
FLSA Status: Exempt
LOCATION: San Diego, CA 92101
COMPENSATION: $72,000 - $78,000

Position Summary:
The Chef Instructor will be responsible for leading culinary instruction both in classroom and within the kitchen for the Dual Instruction Culinary Program. The Chef Instructor will work closely with the Director of Programs, Instruction Team, and Career Service Coordinators to ensure apprentices are job-ready within a learning culture that is industry-informed, trauma-informed, and learner-centered. The Dual Instruction program operates at the facility of a mission-aligned third-party nonprofit organization.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Culinary Instruction
· Design training schedule that incorporates classroom and hands-on kitchen training.
· Prepare and present lesson plans using course curriculum.
· Conduct hands-on cooking instruction in classroom and kitchen setting.
· Provide one-on-one coaching to reinforce professional communication, conflict resolution, and team building with a trauma-informed lens.
· Develop creative instructional methods to engage apprentices in the learning process.
· Administer practical work readiness assessments.
· Work one-on-one with apprentices to ensure comprehension of lessons and information.
· Collaborate with training site partners to create and maintain a positive and safe learning environment. Oversee the various ordering, set-up, and cleanup needed for culinary lessons and guest presentations.
· Ensure food is prepared safely, efficiently, and according to specifications or request.
· Ensure kitchen runs in accordance with all applicable health, safety, and hygiene codes and standards.
· Maintain food purchasing budget in accordance with established budget.
· Support delivery of Food Handlers Certification course and exam administration for all apprenticeship cohorts, ensure Food Handlers certifications are completed within designated timeframe.
· As needed, facilitate kitchen trials and evaluate candidates for enrollment.
· Work closely with team members in the evaluation and overall assessment of each apprentice
throughout the program.
· Collaborate with partners and stakeholders to offer a wide range of training experiences.
· Provide professional guidance when needed.
· All other duties as assigned.

Education & Work Experience
· Culinary Arts degree and/or Associates Degree with culinary or hospitality focus highly desirable
· 5+ years of relevant industry experience at a Chef level or higher, with related management and training experience
· A high degree of technical ability to communicate information in a manner that provides a positive learning experience and instills a passion for the profession
· Administrative and technology skills
· Ability to demonstrate concern and sensitivity toward apprentices’ needs and learning styles
· ServSafe Manager certified (preferred)
· ServSafe Proctor certification (preferred)
· Certified Culinary Instructor Designation (preferred)
Work Environment
This job operates in a kitchen environment, housed with equipment such as an oven, stove, dishwasher, slicer, coffee machine, steamer, mixer and chef’s knives. The employee is frequently exposed to heat steam, fire and noise.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The employee is required to stand for prolonged periods of time and, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push, and pull items weighing 50 pounds or less. The position requires manual dexterity; auditory and visual skills, and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures.
Travel:
Employee may be expected to travel across Kitchens for Good locations in San Diego, as needed for mandatory meetings, graduations, and to serve as rotating back-up instructor.
Position Type & Expected Hours of Work
This is a non-exempt fulltime position. Scheduled hours may vary depending on training needs. Monday-Friday with some weekend/evening work when needed.
