Job description

The Granary and Mill Facility Project Manager will be responsible for setting up and overseeing a new grain storage, milling, and fulfillment center that will be housed in a historic barn on a farm in Marin County. This granary will safely store various wheat varieties, produce the highest quality fresh flour on our 48” stone mill, and package and fulfill orders for regional sales and distribution. Access to and training with experts in the fields of grain storage, stone-milling, and fulfillment will be provided.

December 1, 2024 start date as a 9-12  month contract. This new and dynamic role may be extended beyond the initial contract by mutual agreement, with additional responsibilities such as assisting with farming and seed variety selection, communications, market and sales development and small scale event management.

Part time. Approximately 8-15 hours per week. In-person work, primarily on the farm in Marin County.  

Key Responsibilities:

Facility Setup:

  • Research, procure, and install shipping container(s) and other necessary equipment to house grain storage, milling, and fulfillment operations.
  • Communicate and coordinate with the millwright and other existing millhouses for best practices.
  • Research and implement pest control procedures. 
    Utilities & Renovation:
  • Coordinate the setup of essential utilities (water, electricity, and waste) for the facility.
  • Oversee renovations, including the installation of ventilation systems, electrical work, and other necessary requirements.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Collaborate with county health officials to ensure all legal requirements for operating a milling facility are met and be present for on-site inspections and approvals.
  • Establish safety protocols.
  • Monitor the setup of Marin County Agricultural weights and measures, including scale monitoring.


Logistics Coordination:

  • Be present for all deliveries and pickups, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Coordinate all activities with Honoré’s Operations Manager.

Communication and Marketing:

  • Maintain regular communication with team members.
  • Capture progress visually through photographs, video, and written content for social media and marketing campaigns. 
  • Host small-scale friend and fundraising events and milling demonstrations at the farm

Milling and Fulfillment

  • Manage all aspects of the milling process including grain cleaning, milling, and inventory management.
  • Ensure product quality and consistency.
  • Maintain mill log and labels.
  • Oversee equipment maintenance, upkeep, and minor retrofits as needed.
  • Ensure facility cleanliness at all times. 
  • Develop and adhere to Food Safety Policy.
  • Bag and pallet flour, and organize deliveries with carriers to ensure timely fulfillment of orders.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in setting up a food production facility is preferred.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge is required.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn agricultural regulations and compliance standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including county officials and contractors.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Self-motivated, problem-solver, and able to work alone as well as part of a team.
  • Attentive to detail.
  • Reliable, demonstrable through references.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Knowledge of, or at minimum interest in, flour and/or baking is preferred.

Compensation:

  • Hourly rate, paid monthly, $35-$38 per hour
  • Generous discount on flour
