  • Hybrid in-person/remote work

Compensation:

  • $43,264 salaried (32 hours/wk at $26/hr)
  • 92 hours accrued PTO

Montavilla Farmers Market is a small non-profit that runs a year-round open air farm and food marketplace in SE Portland. Our team of four employees works hard to create a vibrant community gathering place where our neighbors have access to local food and farms and small businesses have a sustainable sales outlet. We aim to both support and uplift our vendors while serving our community.


Position summary

The Market Manager is responsible for the planning, execution, and oversight of Montavilla Farmers  Market (MFM) operations including vendor relations, site management, volunteer coordination, point of sale (POS) oversight, staff management, and market reconciliation. They are expected to collaborate as a key member of the staff team and develop effective plans and strategies for their roles.


Ideal [Not Required] Experience and Qualifications 

  • Farmers market management experience
  • Familiarity with farmers market tokens and incentive programs
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations to a wide variety of people while building and maintaining relationships
  • Excitement around creating an equitable and anti-racist farmers market
  • Fast and decisive decision making skills while considering several interests at once
  • Experience working outdoor events and independent office work
  • Cash handling and reconciling experience
  • Familiarity with: FarmSpread, Google Suit, Spreadsheets, Instagram
  • Lives in Montavilla or a surrounding neighborhood
  • Bilingual

Responsibilities 

Vendor Management

  • Coordinate with vendors, set weekly vendor layouts and market maps, coordinate traffic circulation, and collect stall fees
  • Oversee the vendors according to the MFM Vendor Handbook and enforce market rules
  • Teach vendors how to accept market tokens from customers and how to submit for reimbursement. Inform and correct vendors when they use or submit tokens incorrectly
  • Build and maintain positive vendor relationships

Site  Management

  • Manage the market site including physical lot maintenance as needed
  • Promote a safe, positive experience for shoppers and vendors
  • Keep the market clean by regularly checking for and picking up waste not disposed of properly during the market day
  • Assure market safety and access, troubleshoot to solve problems and resolve issues
  • Accurately answer customer questions by being knowledgeable about vendor attendance, current weekly offerings, products, growing practices, and market currency
  • Recruit and oversee volunteers to assist with market-day essential functions
  • Lead the development and coordination of at-market programming

Market Reconciliation

  • Oversee the organization of the token and POS system
  • Accurately reconcile market currency transactions, vendor token return and vendor fees
  • Keep tokens and electronics in a safe place and ensure they are brought to market organized, charged, and ready for the day 

Admin, Reporting, & HR

  • Supervise the Market Crew and Info Booth Operator, including scheduling, logistics, training, and oversight
  • Collect market data for monthly reports  (vendor gross sales, customer counts, token sales, etc.)
  • Monitor and control budget items as they correspond to the Market Manager’s responsibilities
  • Attend monthly Board meetings and provide a market update report 


Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Work every Sunday the market is open (allowance of two missed Sundays): every Sunday May–December; every other Sunday January–April
  • Work outside year-round in varying weather conditions (ranging from sunny and hot to cold and wet)
  • Ability to perform lifting of 50 lbs, squatting, reaching, and other physical tasks
  • Must work in sensory-rich environment with large crowds, varying temperatures, and loud noises
  • Must have a working phone and reliable access to computer and internet for office work
  • Work outside of market hours will be conducted remotely, MFM does not have an office space
  • Token bin transportation to and from market (two medium tote bins), off-site token reconciliation, and storage of tokens and market POS off-site

Required Certificates and Licenses

A valid food handler’s card and CPR training must be obtained within a month of hire.


Workflow and Pay Schedule

This is a year-round, salaried position that is paid monthly (on the 10th of the following month) with accrued PTO. The Market Manager is expected to work 32 hrs/wk year-round.
