Job description

Homestead Design Collective is looking for an Edible Maintenance Gardener to join our team! The position is part-time, 2-4 days per week around 20 or more hours. Our office is based in Lafayette, and our clients are located throughout the greater Bay Area including Napa and Sonoma.
 

As an Edible Maintenance Gardener for Homestead Design Collective, you'll be responsible for planting and maintaining a variety of beautiful, edible gardens. You'll provide succession planting, pruning, organic pest control and more. Additionally, you'll harvest all fruits, vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers for your clients. Client correspondence is a large part of the job; after each visit, you'll send clients a follow up email with detailed notes and photos. You will also be available to answer questions and provide personal instruction.
 

At Homestead Design Collective, you’ll get to explore a variety of garden styles and client needs as you work on projects ranging from rooftop pocket gardens, residential landscapes, and community gardens.

Pay is $24/hr.

Other benefits: Insurance stipend available for 30+hrs/week; sick leave accrued annually. 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Basic yard maintenance including clean up, deadheading, cultivation, and pruning
  • Seed, plant, and harvest annual vegetables and perennial herbs
  • Test and adjust irrigation systems and make minor repairs, as needed
  • Identifying common pest and disease issues and use proper organic pest management controls 
  • Record detailed notes and write personalized emails to clients
  • Update and contribute to internal documents and record keeping
  • Collaborate with Lead Edible Gardener and other HDC staff on various projects
  • Establish friendly and professional relationships with clients
  • Maintain a clean and organized office and garage space, including proper tool care and maintenance 


EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • 2+ years of organic farming or gardening experience
  • Experience working with ornamental plants and flower arranging a plus 
  • Familiarity with in-ground and raised bed irrigation systems (drip and micro spray) and commonly used irrigation system timers a plus
  • Familiarity with basic landscaping tools and equipment 
  • Ability to lift and carry loads up to 45lbs.
  • English language reading, writing, and speaking proficiency
  • Access to a computer and internet
  • Familiarity with Gmail and Google Workspace a plus 
  • A working smartphone with access to internet and a camera 
  • "Can-do" attitude and willingness to pitch in wherever needed; we are a small but highly efficient company where we all wear many hats
  • Friendly and respectful attitude; you will be interacting with clients with a range of needs and knowledge of organic gardening
  • A valid CA driver’s license
  • Reliable access to a vehicle for transport to and from job sites, and for transport of tools and equipment to job sites; as part of a small team, each gardener will have solo work days at various locations across the Bay Area

 

Compensation

this position is: hourly, $20/hr +
