Want to play a pivotal role in developing children’s passion for food, the environment, and sustainability? Want an opportunity to cook and taste delicious local foods with enthusiastic students?
Facilitate lessons in PreK-5th grade classrooms in the South Burlington School District three days a week during the academic year. Lessons are 40 minutes and always include hands-on cooking and taste testing with nutritional information. Assist in co-planning lessons around a sustainable food system, share in the wonder of kids discovering excitement for cooking and eating local food. Lessons are supported by college interns and classroom teachers are present.

Position Purpose
To deliver Farm to School (FTS) lessons in the South Burlington School District (SBSD) elementary classrooms. Through monthly taste tests that accompany the lessons, the FTS educator begins and deepens students’ knowledge of healthy local foods. This position requires 20-30 hours per week, late September – May.
Principle Activities
Deliver FTS lessons with taste tests to three elementary schools, three days a week
Build relationships with stakeholders including, school principalS, faculty, school nurses, District Director of Learning; Nutritional Services Director, etc.
Oversee and collaborate with director, interns/volunteers to co-develop and deliver lessons
Skills, Experience and Background
Required
Ability to co-plan and present engaging lessons
Ability to work with diverse range of administrators, educators, support staff, community members, and elementary school students
Organization and time-management skills
Strong communication skills
Ability to research job-related information
Food prep/culinary skills: cooking skills, ability to research quality recipes that students will enjoy
Ability to execute the production of the recipe to prepare taste tests in a manner that reflects attention to food safety and aesthetics
Basic knowledge of food sources
Willingness to be fingerprinted and have a background check
Desirable
Familiarity with state and federal elementary education standards
Familiarity with health and sanitation standards (food preparation and service)
Knowledge of/experience in food preparation and recipe scaling
Knowledge of/experience in agricultural sciences, plant life cycles, food systems, gardening, farming, etc.
Driver’s license, regular access to a car, safe driving record
Physical activity requirements
Ability to lift and carry between 10 – 25 pounds (occasionally up to 50 pounds)
Ability to transport loads of supplies, food, and equipment between elementary schools
Ability to stand and walk up to 50% of workday
Ability to oversee safe food preparations ensuring the quality of foods being prepared for lessons
Compensation
$18-$22 per hour depending on experience
