Company description

Berkshire Food Co-op is a grocery store business dedicated to building the best store culture possible and every new perspective broadens that culture. This is the privilege and responsibility of every Team Member; their voice counts at the Co-op, more so than in a traditional business, and with that privilege comes the responsibility to use that voice for the betterment of the team and the store. Keep this in mind every day you come to the Co-op and you will flourish here.

We are a co-op. That means we are owned by a portion of the people who shop here. This implies a lot of things, but strictly speaking it means we are a democratically owned business. This doesn’t mean that owners vote on what products we should or shouldn’t carry. It means that our owners elect a board of directors who then hire a General Manager (“GM”). The board ensures that the values of the ownership are being carried out in the operations of the store through the General Manager’s leadership and direction. Because ownership is open to everyone, our community is in control of who we are and what we do. Co-ops are a reflection of the communities in which they exist.

At the Berkshire Food Co-op (The “Company”, “Co-op”, or “BFC”), we do more than sell groceries. Most businesses make money in order to increase the wealth of their owners, investors or shareholders. That’s how conventional capitalism works. Co-ops have a different interpretation; we make money in order to further our mission and ends. When we sell a bag of chips, it’s not just to make money off of those chips, it’s to move the money those chips produce to help build a more sustainable world.
