Job Description: Saba is a non-profit start up in phase one seeking an Operations Manager. Saba currently manages a 3,000 sq ft warehouse space in Jack London which is the site of our produce storage, packing and delivery operations to corner stores in the City of Oakland, and institutional buyers in the East Bay. This role will be responsible for our warehouse operations, wrap-around services to corner stores, overseeing procuring and supply chain activities for produce, grocery and ready-to-eat foods. They will be responsible for setting up and improving on existing structures and systems to deliver excellence in our service to corner stores, institutions, and store customers (incl. Fresh5x market match program). The Operations Manager will be responsible for ensuring that all our customers and suppliers are happy and growing in our relationship.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
- Manage warehouse operations and warehouse facility
- Oversee produce buying, and setting pricing goals for our distribution service
- Expand warehouse operations into strategic directions as determined by leadership (i.e supplying ready-to-eat foods, assembling CSA boxes… and more)
- Developing relevant policies/SOPs and uphold implementation process
- Maximize use of assets (warehouse space, ERP technology) to efficiently operate business
- Perform analysis and execute reports on warehouse operations as needed
- Develop and implement emergency plans and procedures
- Track and monitor warehouse and program budget
- Enhance, design and implement a wrap around service to corner stores including product knowledge training, merchandising support, setting seasonal retail pricing strategy, procuring relevant products, facilitating connections to other suppliers of meat, grocery, dairy, rotisserie, fresh juice and water
- Sets and implements merchandising and sales strategy to corner stores
- Oversees the expansion of our market match (Fresh5x) program in corner stores
- Select and recruit corner stores into our service
- Collaborates with communications team to increase customer demand/satisfaction in stores
- Collaborates with Farm Network team on procuring from BIPOC farmers
Team Management/Supervision
- Manage 4 part-time employees
- Hire and supervise program coordinator, warehouse lead, packers and merchandisers
- Manage service contractors
Grants Management and oversight
- Responsible for developing and overseeing the delivery and monitoring of Federal Grant resources with a program coordinator
- Coordinate the delivery of other grants (i.e. purchasing equipment for stores; capital investments for our facility) with Office Manager
- Responsible for producing project reports for funders in collaboration with grants team
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience required in business operations, produce or other food related industries
- 3-5 years of experience required in produce buying and sales, and merchandising
- 2 years experience in ERP systems preferred Odoo or similar system
- 5 years experience managing staff and building a team
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with other businesses
- 2 years experience managing budgets
- Ability to think outside the box, troubleshoot in high pressure situations, and communicate directly and effectively
- Non-profit experience preferred
- Business management degree preferred
- Excel and software proficiency required
- Comfort with technology required (i.e ERP system)
- Proactive, organized, independent, motivated and detailed oriented manager
- Position requires ability to drive and a valid driver’s license
Compensation and benefits
- This position currently reports to Saba’s Head of Operations
- Time: 100% FTE + benefits
- Location: Oakland, CA
- Compensation: $67,000-$78,000
- Benefits: Full healthcare, dental and vision coverage for employees. 26 days of PTO annually, 11 days company holiday, 401K match plan (4% company contribution, 1% employee contribution required), and a generous sabbatical policy
- Hours of operations: Saba’s office is open 8-5pm; 4 days on site, and 1 day work from home.

this position is: salaried, varies DOE, $67,000.00 - $78,000.00
