POSITION SUMMARYThe Garden and Land Manager is responsible for provision of direct service to clients at a residential mental health treatment facility, the day-to-day operation of a small farm enterprise, and property maintenance. Responsible for facilitating clients in land-based work and for managing a small farm-based supported employment program. Collaborates as a member of a treatment team to develop and implement effective treatment strategies. Uses horticultural therapy techniques as well as clinical approaches to treatment. Volunteer and community outreach. It is highly preferred that this position integrates with the Behavioral Health Technician position.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to and collaborates with the Program Director.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Experience: At least two years of experience farming using organic practices. Experience and/or knowledge in animal husbandry, crop rotation, and sustainable agriculture preferred. One-year experience with individuals with psychiatric disabilities and/or experience in vocational training preferred. Managerial and group facilitation experience preferred.
Education: BA in agriculture-related field or psychology preferred.
Special Skills: Demonstrated ability to work as a team member. Excellent communication skills: oral and written. Good problem-solving and ‘self-starter’ skills. Budgeting and time management skills necessary. Knowledge of and belief in the principles of consumer-centered treatment.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 80 pounds and operate farm equipment.
Other Requirements: Hiring is contingent upon a full background screening in accordance with California licensing regulations; DOJ/FBI clearance, pre-employment physical and TB clearance. DMV printout and Basic First Aid certification is required prior to employment.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIESDirect Service
- Prepares and facilitates groups related to gardening, wellness, and occupational training
- Facilitates completion of farm tasks by clients

Garden Management
- Plans, implements, and maintains ½ acre diversified veggie garden within budget
- Manages each step of crop production from greenhouse propagation to harvest
- Ensures proper storage and use of vegetables in client meals
- Ensures excess produce is properly utilized, either in donations or sales
- Effectively integrates clients into garden and land-based work
- Manages soil fertility using organic methods
- Effective crop planning and record keeping
- Maintains farm equipment: stores equipment properly, supervises its proper use
Animal Husbandry
- Maintains small livestock program
- Ensures safe handling of and healthy living space for livestock
- Monitors health of livestock and utilizes community resources appropriately in caring for them
- Engages clients with animal care
Grounds Management
- Maintains 10-acre property including ½ acre garden, landscaping, and pasture
- Ensures irrigation systems are working properly
- Ensures landscaped areas are maintained and weeds are controlled
- Ensures there is regular mowing and weed whacking when seasonally appropriate
- Removal of debris and non-operational equipment
- Maintenance of fields and infrastructure
Farm to Mouth Supported Employment Program
- Employs a seasonal crew comprised of Farmhouse residents and community members who are receiving mental health services through Yolo County
- Facilitates one 2-hour workday per week
- Communicates employment expectations effectively
- Reviews, corrects, and approves timesheets in Paylocity
Team Member Expectations and Communication
- Communicates regularly with co-staff regarding care and treatment of clients
- Communicates regularly and effectively with Program Director, including utilization of supervision with Program Director to ensure that the Garden Program is integrated with the clinical program
- Participates in staff meetings
- Represents YCCC and programs to others in a professional manner
- Adheres to YCCC’s confidentiality policies
Outreach and Fundraising
- Maintains liaison with appropriate livestock and agricultural agencies as needed
- Makes appropriate referrals for clients to other vocational services
- Utilizes community resources and contacts effectively (to help with projects, gather donations, for problem solving, etc.)
- Coordinates interns and volunteers for farm projects
- Coordinates with other treatment providers
- Raises funds (if opportunity presents) for garden program via produce sales at Farmers market or other community fundraising endeavors
Budget and Time Management
- Operates garden and supported employment program within budget
- Communicates with Program Director about farm-related expenses
- Uses time effectively, efficiently, and transparently
- Demonstrates skill at prioritizing tasks and staying focused
Behavioral Health Technician Integration (highly preferred)
- Completes and maintains all necessary training for Behavioral Health Technician
- Collaborates as part of a team
- Provides crisis management skills as necessary
- Manages milieu to ensure clients feel safe and secure
- Integrates farm activities into Farmhouse program schedule without interrupting other groups
- Completes Behavioral Health Technician duties as needed in order to support staff and program
